HHLT Plans 2013 Take-A-Hike! Schedule
Even as we brace for Nor'easter Nemo, we are looking forward to spring and the Take-A-Hike! season. A special thanks go to our hike leaders who share their expertise and enthusiasm for this beautiful and historic region with our members. Their generosity is greatly appreciated.
Whether you're a beginner, a parent with young children or an experienced hiker looking for a challenge, you'll find a program of interest in this year's schedule. We've arranged a behind the scenes visit to the Bear Mountain Zoo, a rugged trek to the top of Mount Beacon, a journey into the past at the Cornish Estate ruins, and more. You'll be able to read about them all in the 2013 Take-A-Hike! Schedule.
If we have your mailing address, the Take-A-Hike! brochure will arrive in March so you can register for our first hike in April. If not, please send us your contact information at info@hhlt.org and we'll send one out to you, as well. Hikes fill up fast and registration is on a first come, first served basis.
We look forward to seeing you on the trails. |

Governor Cuomo Proposes Smart Investment in Environmental Protection
We are pleased to report that Governor Cuomo's executive budget proposal includes a number of strategies for economic renewal that improve the environment by increasing support for critical environmental protection programs.
The Environmental Protection Fund, which provides dedicated funding to communities throughout New York, will be increased by $19 million to a total of $153 million. To address a backlog of capital needs, the budget also includes $90 million of new capital appropriations for the Department of Environmental Conservation; the Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation; the Department of Agriculture and Markets; and the Olympic Regional Development Authority under the New York Works program. This infusion of capital funds will accelerate capital infrastructure projects statewide, spur the creation of jobs, and leverage private sector and Federal investment.
Contact the Governor to commend the strong investment in New York's environment, economic recovery and future growth.

Raise Your Voice in Support of the Environment and Local Farms
This March, join HHLT's staff and board, community leaders, farmers and local foods advocates to tell the state legislature how much you care about the environment, local farms and food.
Be an advocate for the Environmental Protection Fund (EPF) on March 6. The EPF supports a wide variety of programs that generate revenue and create jobs across New York State. A recent analysis by The Trust for Public Land found that for every $1 the EPF invests, $7 is returned to New York State. For more information and to register for EPF Lobby Day, visit www.keepprotectingny.com. Previous lobby efforts helped educate legislators on the value of the EPF, paving the way for this year's increase in funding. You can join us to be another voice for clean air and water, protected parklands and good quality jobs.
Farms and farm-related businesses directly employ almost 54,000 New Yorkers, with an additional 68,000 jobs in food processing, beverage and related businesses. However, the loss of farmland to development has fragmented the farm landscape and driven up the cost of agricultural land, posing a challenge for new and expanding farmers to buy land. Come to Albany with HHLT on March 13 to voice support of legislation that protects farmland and increases access to locally grown food. Visit http://newyork.farmland.org/no-farms-no-food to learn more and join the movement.
