Spring is here and I'm sure a lot of you are excited about getting into your yard, and enjoying some of that wonderful sunshine. Maybe this winter you had a chance to finish some of your UFO's. And now, all of those UFO's need backings and to be quilted. The answer - Fat Quarters! Sometimes piecing a back from fat quarters can actually save you some money - and is a great opportunity to add interest to your quilt. And we know you have a few fat quarters that you are not sure what to do with. Below is a Fat Quarters as Backing Chart.
These measurements assume that the fat quarters are squared up to 17" x 19" before sewing. Not all fat quarters are cut the same - and some people wash their fabrics - so these measurements reflect that. Then, they are sewn with a 1/4" seam.
2 x 2 (4 Fat Quarters) 33 1/2" x 27 1/2"
3 x 3 (9 Fat Quarters) 50" x 56"
4 x 4 (16 Fat Quarters) 66 1/2" x 74 1/2"
4 x 5 (20 Fat Quarters) 66 1/2" x 93"
5 x 5 (25 Fat Quarters) 83" x 93"
5 x 6 (30 Fat Quarters) 83" x 111 1/2"
6 x 6 (36 Fat Quarters) 99 1/2" x 111 1/2"
What a great way to reduce your stash! Now that you have the tops and backing ready - machine quilting is next! We have a list of Longarm Quilters in our area or you can take Diane's First Steps to Free-Motion Quilting Class and learn to quilt them yourself with your home machine or your long arm machine.
We are offering some new classes and bringing back some favorites. Taking a class is a great way to learn a technique, meet new sewers/quilters and have fun doing it.
