 Locovore Philanthropy
Deep Community Connections
by Rachel Sagan, ABUW Executive Director
Why give locally? In recent years the local food movement has gained momentum - people are focused on where their food comes from and there is conscious effort to consume local foods as much as possible. "Locovore" became the 2007 word of the year in the Oxford American Dictionary. Do the principles driving the local food movement apply to our giving and illustrate the power of giving locally? What would "locovore philanthropy" look like? It might include supporting the issues that are close to your heart and home . . .
Local dollars are arguably "fresher". There is less distance between the community group, the people in need and the donor who makes the gift. Rich relationships can grow and develop between those who give and those who work (or volunteer) at local agencies . . . A locavore model of giving might sustain the smaller non-profits that have their ears to the ground and deep connections to the communities they serve.

Local dollars DO make a local impact. For example, your donations to ABUW's Spring Campaign may support a future community-wide program such as Chris Herren's January presentation, or:
- $250 will provide a full meal to 70 guests at a community supper;
- $100 will provide legal consultation for a disabled adult seeking medical services under the Mass Health Act;
- $50 will provide a daily meal for one homebound senior for one week;
- $25 provides a domestic violence survivor a certified copy of a court order for protection.
