Dear (Contact First Name),
Lots going on in the nonprofit sector both in and out of the PCNRC. This edition highlights some of the programs, including a luncheon hosted by the Northeast Indiana Planned Giving Council featuring Jim Gillespie. When I took the planned giving course at the IU School of Philanthropy Jim was the instructor, and he was great. So, if planned giving is one of your responsibilities you don't want to miss this opportunity to hear Jim present! Also included is a listing of June programs so you'll have a heads-up and can watch your mailbox of e-blasts with details. Remember last month's greeting from me which revealed my extraordinary opportunity with NASA?... I must confess it was all a tall tale. Kudos to the readers who caught on to the subtle clues such as, Avril Duper! and for those who might have been taken in, let me say that you share that distinction with some very important people.
Sincerely,

May 23 @ 4 Series Program Prospect Research
Prospect research is the process in fundraising wherein a researcher identifies and provides relevant information about potential or current donors to an organization.
Join our guest speaker, Mary Chamberlain, Associate Director of Grants and Advancement Services for Indiana Tech, as she guides us through the basics of prospect research and shows what a donor profile looks like.
Discover how your organization can ethically and thoughtfully use this process in your fundraising. |

Term Limits or No Term Limits?
A controversial topic in the nonprofit sector is whether or not boards should have term limits. There are those that believe that having limits is an absolute must and there are those that believe that who in their right mind would tell their best board member they HAVE to leave the board. Here is a list of the positive and negative reasons for having term limits.
|
PROS
| CONS | |
Infuses 'new blood' on the board
| Loss of a great board member | | Allows tired members to leave gracefully | Loss of expertise | | Provides opportunity for diversifying the board | Potential for disruptive turnover | | Creates a base of alumni advocates for your organization | Loss of relationships of that particular board member | |
Reduces group stagnation
|
Breaks up close-knit, well functioning team

Negotiating Gifts of Unusual Assets

Did you know that 85% of planned gifts are simple bequests?
Planned Giving, by definition, a planned gift is any major gift, made in lifetime or at death as part of a donor's overall financial and/or estate planning. It is a method of supporting nonprofits and charities that enables philanthropic individuals or donors to make larger gifts than they could make from their income. While some planned gifts provide a life-long income to the donor, others use estate and tax planning techniques to provide for charity and other heirs in ways that maximize the gift and/or minimize its impact on the donor's estate

Faculty at Indiana University's Center on Philanthropy - The Fund Raising School
