Quick Photo Tip - Geotagging and Security on Smartphones

I recently bought my youngest daughter an iphone. One of the first things I did  was turn off the geotagging option on her photos. I attended a seminar on social media, and it was scary the information the presenter could get, just by taking a picture of his shoe in the school gym and searching. He found all kinds of photos of people associated with the school - when they took photos at the school and this feature was turned on, their photos show up.  From those photos, he could often tell where they lived, what activities they do, what kind of car they drive, how many children and their ages etc.  Not necessarily info you want in the wrong hands.

Geotagging is the process of adding latitude and longitude - GPS coordinates - to an image so the geographic location can be identified. Many smartphones, especially current models, include the ability to automatically add these coordinates to every photo taken on your smartphone. While it seems like a very cool feature, you have to think about what information you are sharing.  It's important to make sure that the geotagging option is turned off so that the GPS coordinates of your photos aren't included, especially when uploading images to Facebook, Twitter and other social media sites. You may be okay with a stranger knowing your every move, but think twice about it.  Does someone really need to know that you are away from home on vacation and that your home is unattended?  Does someone need to know where your kids attend school and that they walk home? Etc.

To check this on the iPhone, go to Settings>Privacy>Location Services. If it is selected as 'on,' press that option and it will show you which applications are selected as 'on.' Turn off your camera, Facebook and any other application you do not wish to have access to your GPS coordinates. This is particularly important for those minors with smartphones as they are heavy users of social media and may be putting out more information than they intend. By adjusting your location settings, you may also influence other things such as locator software and maps so be aware of which apps have access to this information.
