When Present is Better than Perfect

In the photojournalism profession, there is an old editors saying that states, "f/8 and be there." Some attribute this quote to Robert Capa, while others believe it was Arthur Fellig.

This quote stems from the idea that, in photojournalism, it is more important to be prepared for an important moment when it happens as opposed to having the perfect camera settings for each shot. For photojournalists, being ready trumps artistic experimentation; being at the critical moment and capturing it matters most. Shooting at f/8 will give a strong de  pth of field and allow photojournalists to capture the scene with minimal blur.

Even if you aren't a photojournalist (and by the way, you are the photojournalist of YOUR life), be ready with the perfect camera - the one you have with you! Whether that be a DSLR or your iphone, the one you have is the perfect one at the moment.
