Happy New Year from LCE
It's Been A Truly Amazing Year For LCE
None of This Would Be Possible Without the Help of Our Donors and Supporters

Please Help us Keep the Momentum Going in 2015!

Just look at what LCE and its Youth Board have accomplished this year...

Working Collaboratively
to Open Doors

When the community reported that students had no opportunities to engage in service, we put together a youth board and with the help of teachers and community members we started turning the ideas of youth into action!

The young adults on Pine Ridge Reservation are demonstrating that when given opportunities and support, they can and will reach for the stars.

With your continuing support the future is full of wonderful possibilities!

Summer Plays It Forward

Youth Advisory Board member Summer Montileaux has become a leader in the movement to give back to her community.

She won a Disney Friends for Change Grant and then won ABC's Summer of Service Award!
Go Girl!

She applied her prize money to host a Teen and Young Adult Holiday Party, where teens packaged food for local families, distributed books, sneakers and boots, decorated Santa hats, collected gifts and more.

This party was a HUGE SUCCESS!

Summer said of her role on the Youth Board:

"I am learning to step out of my comfort zone and put myself out in the community about topics that are important.

I would never have done that without the encouragement and mentorship from LCE.

I'm finding my place here in the community. I am so proud to be a part of the advisory board!"

Bobby Stands Up For Education

Youth Advisory Board member Bobby Pourier was named South Dakota's 2014-15 Youth Service Ambassador by Youth Service America and spent a week in Washington, DC for leadership training.

Bobby met with SD Senator Tim Johnson and told him about his plans to bring panel discussions on the benefits of a strong education to Middle School students on Pine Ridge.

And he made it happen! The presentations will begin in January 2015. Stay tuned for reports on this exciting program.

Bobby also spent the summer working as one of the youngest interns at the National Institute of Health. Go Bobby!

Bobby said of LCE's approach:

"LCE never lets us forget that thouse of us who remain in school and give back to our communities really are the 'cool' kids."

Keith Takes An International Stage

Youth Advisory Board Chair Keith Martinez, a Gates Millennium Scholar and a Presidential Scholar at Villanova University, was named a Champion for Change by the Center for Native American Youth at the Aspen Institute for his service work with LCE.

This year Keith helped run our Youth Summit, which featured Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Jody Williams and spoken word performer Jasmine Mans. Keith spoke at our Annual Writing Challenge award ceremony, and he made his international speaking debut with LCE President Maggie Dunne at the United Nations.

Keith did an impressive job addressing a full house at the Nexus Global Youth Summit, an experience he described as "both exciting and terrifying."

Keith was invited to attend the White House Tribal Nations Conference, where he met President Obama and was featured in an MTV Video that highlighted emerging Native American leaders! Keith spoke in the video about LCE's book program, which at this point has gathered more than 20,000 books for Reservation schools and programs.

Keith said of his accomplishments:

"None of this would have been possible without LCE's support and guidance - allowing me to give back to my community and encouraging me to be proud of my heritage."
