The History of Design Influencing Tomorrow's Breakthoughs

Visions Issue 2 dives deep into the history of design thinking shaping industry leaders' identities and investing early in exploration and experimentation as NPD professionals pursue solutions for an undefined future.

The cover story, "The Power of Design Thinking," comes from K. Scott Swan and Abbie Griffin, authors of the new book "Design Thinking: New Product Development Essentials from the PDMA." Swan and Griffin delve into historical design movements and how they helped shape organizations' design identities. They urge NPD professional to recognize that while history offers lessons and options, but "creativity and innovation are required to response to the ever-changing social and competitive context."

Also in this issue, don't miss "Predicting Disruptive Activity," an exclusive look at what OCI recipient UnitedHealth Group has been up to since winning the award in 2011, and Visions Editor-in-Chief Brad Barbera's interview with Dr. Gina O'Connor on navigating inherent risks and uncertainties to successfully execute breakthrough innovation in "Breaking the Mold."
