PIM 2014: Successful Innovation in Denver

The once-a-year Product Innovation Management (PIM) Conference just wrapped up this week in Denver, CO! Featuring highly interactive programs and sessions, attendees walked away with actionable ideas and tools to improve innovation practices at their organizations.

On Saturday, October 18, and Sunday, October 19, PDMA's Annual Research Forum kicked off as the only event in which both the theory and practice of product development merged in a peer-to-peer exchange of research and methodologies. Annual Research Forum Co-Chairs Wig G. Biemans, associate professor at the Faculty of Economics and Business of the University of Groningen, and Dr. Fred Langerak, professor of Product Development and Management in the School of Industrial Engineering at Eindhoven University of Technology, both brought different interests and perspectives to the table to create a well-rounded Annual Research Forum.

On Monday, October 20 – Wednesday, October 22, the PIM conference workshops provided opportunities for individuals to further hone in on specific product management and innovation goals and niches. The full speaker lineup was impressive, igniting conversation about innovation and more.

For those preparing for the New Product Development Certification (NPDP), two conference workshops highlighted information covered in the exam: strategy, portfolio management, new product management, tools and metrics, market research and more.

Stay tuned for a full recap of PIM 2014, and more information to come on PIM 2015! Also check out what attendees had to say about #PIM14 on Twitter and download the PIM 2014 Advance Program for further details on everything covered in Denver. Thank you to all who attended!

Book Review: Winning with Risk Management

By Russell Walker, Review by Teresa Jurgens-Kowal, Ph.D., NPDP

Toyota has suffered significant fines, and as Walker points out, correcting brand damage might far exceed the expense of regulatory actions.

Measuring the firm's risk tolerance relative to the industry and close competitors can help a firm minimize the impact and cost of risk events. For example, how does a new product introduction compare to those within a similar industry? Understanding the financial and market risks relative to competitors may reveal vulnerabilities as well as opportunities.
