Book Review: Brand esSense: Using Sense, Symbol and Story to Design Brand Identity

By Neil Gains. Review by Teresa Jurgens-Kowal, Ph.D., NPDP

Much of the customer data gathered during the market research phases of new product development (NPD) is focused on positioning the product upon commercialization. New products attempt to solve a customer's problem while the marketing collateral yields an emotional link with the consumer. ”Brand esSense” by Neil Gains goes a step further in advising the branding decisions based on human senses.

The author identifies a logical framework for product branding involving senses, symbols, and stories. About half of Gains' book is dedicated to explaining the breadth and depth of human senses. Chapter 1, for instance, includes data demonstrating that we humans respond to our perceptions and expectations more than we do to “what's really out there” (pg. 12). Effective marketing of new products certainly relies on customer's perceptions as well.

What the Stage-Gate framework lacks is a specific roadmap to get from the Discovery Stage to the Development Stage.  That is what Gijs van Wulfen's book, Creating Innovative Products and Services – The FORTH Innovation Method, offers.

Pittsburgh Chapter July Event Highlights the Importance of Startup Accelerators

Startup accelerators are changing the local and national product development landscape and represent some of the best opportunities for innovation. The Pittsburgh Chapter reached out to current start-up community thought leaders to give insights and perspectives on the impact of accelerators.

On July 16th , the Pittsburgh Chapter hosted “What are Startup Accelerators and Why Established Companies Should Care” at AlphaLab Gear, a nationally-ranked startup accelerator.

Dr. Susan Cohen, co-author of “ Accelerating Startups: The Seed Accelerator Phenomenon ” presented the keynote address where she discussed the state of the accelerator movement across the United States.

Kit Needham, CMU Entrepreneur in Residence at Project Olympus, added to the presentation by discussing local innovation ecosystem, and where and how accelerators fit. A panel of representatives from established companies who have worked with or mentored startup companies also shared their experiences.

This event marks the fourth valuable topic that the Pittsburgh Chapter's Programming Committee scheduled for local product development professionals in the area.
