Senior Center Renovations
The Fremont Senior Center is excited to be undergoing a bathroom renovation and addition in the early part of June! Since 1980 when the Senior Center was built, the senior population has almost quadrupled, causing existing bathroom facilities to be sadly inadequate. This renovation will add a large women's restroom and renovate the other four bathrooms so they are more accessible to seniors with wheelchairs, scooters, etc. Hip, hip hooray - no more lines in the restroom!
Welcome Jeffrey!
The Fremont Senior Center is pleased to announce that Jeffrey Castillo is our new Chef/Food Services Manager! Jeff is multi-talented, as he is a graduate of the San Francisco Culinary Academy and has a Bachelor's Degree in Business Operations. His success in the Senior Center kitchen has been confirmed by the fact that many of our lunches are sold out in advance.
Breakfast is served at the center Monday through Friday ($4 for members of the center, $5 without membership) from 8 am to 9:30 am, and Lunch is served at 12 noon ($4 for members, $5 for non-members), also five days each week. It is recommended that you purchase lunch ahead of time so you are assured of getting a meal. Our lunch menus can be found on our website at Senior Center Lunch Menus, or weekly menus can be accessed by calling 790-6610. It is also possible to buy meals "to go," in the office, or by calling the center in the morning (provided it isn't sold out already). Hope you can join us for a great meal!
Fremont's Warming Center
for the Homeless
Despite California's current drought, Fremont's warming center for the homeless was open for 23 days this winter, from November 15 through March 15. Fremont Senior Center's Wing A was transformed into a welcoming place for the 129 homeless men and women, twice as many as last year, who took advantage of the opportunity to get out of wet and very cold winter temperatures.
Volunteers and Site Monitors were trained by Human Services with assistance from Abode Services, a local non-profit supporting and housing the homeless in our community. With strong collaboration and coordination from City Serve Compassion Network, church volunteers delivered and served hot and hearty dinners, like clockwork. Thanks to a generous grant from Cargill Corporation, the Senior Center Chef was able to provide hot breakfasts for program participants before they departed from the Center at 7:00 a.m. Each participant received a foam sleeping mat and a new sleeping bag and pillow, many donated through the City's Human Relations Commission. Participants enjoyed, movies, games and especially well received was a bicycle repair workshop offered by one of the volunteers.
A call for warm jackets, blankets and toiletries posted on the FRC Facebook page was picked up and pushed out by Fremont Police Department and others and within two days had gone viral. Donations of all sizes and shapes began to pour in from local residents and by the New Year, the interior of the Human Services Department looked like a small thrift store! Both awestruck and appreciative of all of the donations received, the department will work with CityServe to see that donated items serve the homeless population and needy families all year long.
The Department, on behalf of the homeless men and women in our community, wishes to thank the Alameda County Community Development Department for funding to operate the program, Cargill for their corporate contribution, City Serve volunteers and the many others who donated clothing, amenities and food. Thanks also to staff of the Human Services Department, especially the Senior Center, for helping to make this short, but intense project a success!

Youth & Family Services
Celebrates 2015 National Children's Mental Health Awareness Day
Human Services' Youth and Family Services Division along with many communities across the country celebrated National Children's Mental Health Awareness Day on May 7th. The goal of this annual national initiative is to raise awareness about the importance of positive mental health and end the stigma around mental health.
This year Mayor Bill Harrison provided a proclamation for National Children's Mental Health Awareness Day at our City Council meeting on Tuesday, May 5, 2015. The Mission San Jose High School Peer Resource Students was honored with a Community Service Appreciation Certificate. The students organized and hosted a benefit show at Mission San Jose High School as part of a mental health awareness campaign. The night was filled with fun and creative acts revolving around the theme of hope to encourage discussion and shed light on the stigma that surrounds mental health issues. All proceeds from T-Shirt sales and tickets were raised as a donation for Fremont Human Services Department, Youth and Family Services Division.
To thank the students for their great efforts to increase awareness of mental health issues and help reduce stigma around accessing support, Youth and Family Services nominated the students to receive a 2015 Alameda County Mental Health Board (ACMHB), Community Service Award that will be presented to the students at the Annual ACMHB Community Service Awards Ceremony on Thursday, May 14, 2015.

NEW Senior Peer Coaching Program Implemented

City of Fremont Aging and Family Services implemented a new innovative program called the Senior Peer Coaching Program, a program funded by the Alameda County Behavioral Health Care Services through the Mental Health Service Act.
Twelve clients who where successful graduates in the Senior Mobile Mental Health Program were trained to become peer coaches. The training was conducted over a seven week period and classes were held 2 days a week for 3 hours each. The training curriculum included:
- Working with anxiety, depression, loss and grief.
- Learning and practicing peer coaching skills such as active listening, asking effective questions and using motivational interviewing.
- Developing skills that personally empower peers, with emphasis on problem-solving, action planning, increasing knowledge of community resources and self-management of mental health conditions.
After the training, peer coaches partner with isolated older adults to support their mental health recovery through emotional, resource and problem solving support. These coaches are empathetic and enthusiastic, and have a desire to help other isolated seniors suffering from mental illness.

Help Applying for Citizenship -
April 25th Event a Big Success!
The International Institute of the Bay Area (IIBA) and the East Bay Naturalization Collaborative (EBNatz), together with Fremont Family Resource Center (FRC) held our fifth Citizenship Day Saturday, April 25, at the Fremont Family Resource Center.
127 attendees received services, resulting in 80 completed naturalization applications. Attendees received FREE assistance in filling out the naturalization application and fee waivers if necessary. 37 volunteers and 24 staff provided services in many languages including Spanish, Chinese and Farsi. There are many benefits to becoming a citizen including the opportunity to file immigrant visa petitions for parents, children and siblings. Perhaps most importantly, citizens can have full civic participation in this country and make sure their voices are heard.
Among the local non-profits leading the charge to increase the number of citizens is Asian Pacific Islander Legal Outreach, Catholic Charities of the East Bay, Centro Legal de la Raza, East Bay Sanctuary, International Institute of the Bay Area, Korean Community Center of the East Bay, International Rescue Committee and the Jewish Family and Children's' Services. In 2011, these immigration service providers created the East Bay Collaborative, a partnership designed to support each organization's citizenship efforts by sharing tools and best practices, and providing volunteer support at large-scale citizenship fairs. The member organizations of the East Bay Naturalization Collaborative have a long history of providing services to immigrants and want to make sure Tri-City residents receive trustworthy legal advice and reliable help with completing their applications for naturalization.
Plans are already underway for the next FRC Citizenship event, to take place in the Fall 2015. To learn more about IIBA and EBNatz, please visit the websites www.iibayarea.org and www.ebnatz.org.

Learn How to Ride Bus and BART!
The Tri-City Travel Training Program offers workshops and individualized training sessions to help seniors and people with disabilities learn how to use local buses (AC Transit and Union City Transit) and BART as well as Clipper, the all-in-one transit card.
Jacob, a local high school student with autism, was paired up recently with one of our program's travel trainers so that he could learn how to get home from school on AC Transit. His travel trainer worked with him to map out the bus route and they took several practice runs until he was comfortable going by himself. After the training, Jacob's father said, "I'm glad the Travel Training Program exists. For a young person like Jacob, having the knowledge to use public transit gives him the independence and freedom to go where he needs to, on his own."
Evelyn, a senior that recently participated in a travel training workshop at the senior center said the class was "very informative and provided useful tools" for riding transit.
If you are interested in learning how to ride transit, register for one of our workshops listed below or contact us to schedule an individualized training session.
Upcoming Travel Training workshops will be held at the following locations:
Fremont Senior Center 40086 Paseo Padre Pkwy, Fremont
- May 28th and 29th from 9am to 12pm
- June 29th and 30th from 9am to 12pm
Ruggieri Senior Center 33997 Alvarado-Niles Rd., Union City
- June 2nd and 3rd from 9am to 12pm
To register for a workshop or for more information, contact Pamela Gutierrez at (510) 574-2053 or pgutierrez@fremont.gov.

May is Older
Americans Month!
Older Americans Month 2015
Each May, the Administration for Community Living celebrates Older Americans Month to recognize older Americans for their contributions to the nation. This year, in honor of the 50th anniversary of the Older Americans Act (OAA), we are focusing on how older adults are taking charge of their health, getting engaged in their communities, and making a positive impact in the lives of others. The theme for Older Americans Month 2015 is Get into the Act.
Older Americans Month provides an opportunity to raise awareness of the importance of community engagement as a tool for enhancing the wellbeing of older adults. Now is the time to Get into the Act to make the benefits of community living a reality for more older Americans. Together we can promote healthy aging, increase community involvement for older adults, and tackle important issues like the prevention of elder abuse.
Let's celebrate this month by thinking about all the older adults in our lives that have made this world a special place!
