City of Fremont Human Relations Commission Attends Northern California Regional Conference

On September 27, 2013, Human Relations Commission (HRC) Chair Debra Watanuki, Commissioner Beth Hoffman and staff attended the California Association of Human Relations Organizations (CAHRO) Northern California Regional Conference, which was held at the top of the Transamerica Pyramid.  With breathtaking views of the bay area as a backdrop, representatives from twelve city and county HRCs shared their recent projects and successes.  Many of the commissions have focused on combatting human trafficking and engaging youth in human relations work. George Gascon, San Francisco District Attorney, was the keynote speaker.  The San Francisco HRC will be hosting the annual CAHRO state-wide conference, which is tentatively scheduled for the last Friday of April 2014.  If you are interested in attending, please contact Marylou Johnson at (510) 574-2040.

A SOLD OUT EVENT!
"Bedazzled: 20th Annual
Seniors' Night Out"
Over 320 seniors, escorts and sponsors enjoyed a 'Bedazzling' evening of good food, entertainment and dancing for the 20th Annual Seniors' Night Out held at the Hilton Hotel on October 18th. The sounds of steel drums and Caribbean music kept the dance floor busy as everyone celebrated this unique City of Fremont and Tri-City Elder Coalition party. This event celebrates our older adults and raises funds for a Personal Urgent Need Fund that helps seniors pay for items and services they cannot afford. One senior couple remarked, "We don't get out much anymore except for doctor's visits, this is really a special evening for us."  Another mentioned that this was the best evening she had had in over three years. Thank you to the hardworking event committee and all our sponsors who made this event so successful!

Annie Bailey and Iris Preece

Transitions in Youth & Family Services

The Human Services Department will greatly miss the leadership and dedication of our respected colleague, Iris Preece, Administrator of the Youth and Family Services Division, who will be retiring on November 15, 2013 after 20 years of outstanding service.

During her tenure, Iris has promoted quality mental health programs serving families and youth in Fremont including counseling services in 20 Fremont schools; a collaboration with Fremont's Police Department diverting first-time youth offenders from the criminal justice system, an Alcohol and Drug Intervention program for teens; a Youth Empowerment and Employment Academy for Probation Youth, and many other programs fostering positive parenting and the strong social and emotional development of children. On November 5, 2013 Iris will be recognized by the Alameda County Human Relations Commission and Supervisor Scott Haggerty of District 1, for Excellence in Human Relations, and for fostering mutual respect for all people who live and work in Alameda County.

The Human Services Department welcomes Annie Bailey as the new Youth and Family Services Administrator. Annie is already on board and working with Iris to ensure a smooth transition. Prior to joining Human Services, Annie was Co- Principal Management Consultant and Executive Coach at Bibby LLC. She also recently completed her Master's Degree in Public Administration/Public Management from the University of Southern California and holds a Master's in Counseling and is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT). Annie worked for many years in Contra Costa County as a Mental Health Program Manager overseeing programs to support child development and to help families become self-sufficient.

We welcome Annie to Human Services and look forward to working with her!

Family Caregiver Support Program

Support Group Meeting at the Park

Launched in 2001, and funded in part by the Older Americans Act, the Family Caregiver Support Program meets the needs of those who care for ill, disabled or frail family members. Caregivers come together to discuss the emotional, physical and spiritual aspects of devoting time and energy to their aged or ill family members, and in doing so, keep creating communities of caring and supportive friends. Whether in a Monday morning yoga/meditation class or a spirited support group gathering, participants laugh, cry, speak out and enjoy the camaraderie that comes with sharing their common journey.

In January 2014, the popular Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction class, which runs for 8 weeks, will be offered for caregivers, and will offer helpful tools to better manage caregiving challenges. For more information, call Nancy Rothschild, LMFT, at 510-574-2035 or nrothschild@fremont.gov.

'Giving Hope' to Families and Seniors
During the Holidays!

The Holiday Season is a time of reflection to count personal and family blessings and to share the love we have received during the year with others. Some, in our community, live economically on the edge of crisis just struggling to maintain the barest of necessities for themselves and their families. Help those served by the Fremont Human Services Department by being part of Giving Hope, established in 2000, a program that aids needy families, children, and frail isolated seniors by bringing them holiday cheer as well as assistance all year round.

Touch the lives of those in need by helping us with:

 Cash donations (Corporate matching gifts gladly               received)

 Gift cards for groceries, restaurants, entertainment

 Provide personalized gifts for a family or senior using       their very own wish list

Last year over 330 families and elders were served. This year the program is expanding to include seniors from the Niles Mobile Home Park and the Life ElderCare Program.

To make a donation, contact Monica Dominguez, Coordinator, at MDominguez@fremont.gov or 510-574-2057.  Mail your monetary donation to: Giving Hope Holiday Fundraiser, Human Services Department, P.O. Box 5006, Fremont, CA 94537.  Or, make a donation online City of Fremont Human Services Donations.

Your generosity is appreciated and will add a little joy to our Tri-City families and seniors!

COVERED CALIFORNIA

Covered California is the state's marketplace for the federal Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. Covered California was charged with creating a new health insurance marketplace in which individuals and small businesses can get access to affordable health insurance plans.

With coverage starting in 2014, Covered California will help individuals determine whether they are eligible for premium assistance that will be available on a sliding-scale basis to reduce insurance costs, or whether they are eligible for low-cost or no-cost Medi-Cal. Consumers can then compare health insurance plans and choose the plan that works best for their health needs and budget. Also, by law, individuals can no long be denied coverage or charged more for the existence of a pre-existing medical condition.

At the time of this publication, the Family Resource Center (FRC) is in the process of applying to become a Certified Enrollment Entity where consumers will be able to come for assistance with enrolling in coverage.

The FRC, together with Fremont Health Start/East Bay Agency for Children, will be hosting an information event on Monday December 2 from 10:00 AM - 2:00 at 39155 Liberty Street, Building EFGH, Pacific Room Suite H800, Fremont, CA 94538.

Consumers are also encouraged to visit Covered California at www.coveredca.com or call 1-800-300-1506 to lean about plans, shop and compare and receive online support to enroll.
