August 2013
We make a living by what we do,
but we make a life
by what we give.
The August edition of the e-Newsletter is dedicated to our volunteers and interns, without whom the work that we do would not be possible. Here are a few 'shout outs' to some who make a tremendous impact in our community.
Your passion and loyalty are an inspiration to us all!

Fremont Community Joins Pride Celebration
 | | SF Pride Parade |
For a third year, the City of Fremont, led by the Human Relations Commission, joined in the SF Pride Parade, held on June 30. This 43rd annual celebration of gay culture and life was one of the biggest in the nation with over 200 marching contingents and hundreds of thousands of spectators. This year's event theme, Embrace, Encourage and Empower, took on an even deeper meaning in the wake of the Supreme Court's move ending the Defense of Marriage Act and upholding an earlier ruling declaring Prop 8's gay marriage ban unconstitutional. Over 80 Fremont volunteers, of all ages, designed and constructed a festive parade entry, and marched in the parade with local policy makers and their family members.

4 Seasons of Health Expo Huge Success!
 | | June 7, 2013 - 4 Seasons Health Expo |
The Fourth Annual Four Seasons of Health Expo took place this year on a beautiful June day at the Fremont Senior Center and Central Park. With over 125 vendors attending, the Expo welcomed over 2,000 residents who had the opportunity to learn about services for baby boomers, seniors and their families. Additionally a variety of health screenings were offered including blood pressure; blood sugar; cholesterol screenings; dental and eye exams; bone density; nutrition screens; pneumonia and shingles vaccinations. Tai Chi for Arthritis, Zumba Gold and Yuanji Dance demonstrations offered participants the opportunity to learn new skills for staying physically active. Dave Mandell and the SweetHarps Harmonica Band serenaded the audience as they ate a delicious BBQ lunch. Read more...

Parent Project: Another Successful Year!
Youth and Family Services is pleased to announce the successful completion of YFS's 2012/2013 Parent Project© season. Parents, grandparents and other guardians are welcomed into either the Spanish or English parenting class occurring during the Fall and Spring of every school year.
Parent Project is a 13 week class, meeting one evening per week, that is tailored towards parents of adolescents with destructive or out of control behaviors. Parent Project easily blends useful parenting strategies to reduce conflict in the home, increase communication skills, and improve relationships among family members. Each class is conducted by certified Parent Project instructors Jody Montgomery and Anya Marquez.
In addition to the instructors, the success of Parent Project would not be possible if not for the support and facilitation of our interns Jessica Reid and Gretchen Kryss. These dedicated volunteers went beyond their "normal duties" and easily built supportive relationships with parents, giving their time and care to each person that came through our doors. A special thank you to Jessica and Gretchen for their hard work, support, and passion for helping parents!
For more information on Parent Project or to sign up for our Fall 2013 classes in English or Spanish beginning in October, please call Youth and Family Services at (510) 574-2100. Also visit Internships and Practicums at YFS.

Youth & Family Services' Intern Counselors Assist Local Families and Children
 | | June 2013 - Youth & Family Services Counselors and Interns Year End Celebration |
Each year YFS interns serve more than 500 local children and families, and contribute over 18,000 hours on FUSD school campuses, and serve families at the YFS counseling offices in the Fremont Resource Center.
All are graduate students or post-graduates in counseling, clinical psychology or social work. Each is committed to volunteering a minimum of 20 hours per week under intense licensed supervision. Many of our counseling interns bring skills from previous careers (as behavioral intervention therapists, teachers, and more), as well as bi-lingual skills to better serve the Fremont community in languages such as Spanish, Mandarin, Hindi, Tagalog, and Farsi.
By improving the overall school climate, the YFS school-based counseling program benefits even the children who do not receive direct services. Intern counselors partner with principals and teachers to reduce classroom disruptions, combat bullying, improve attendance, and respond quickly to students in distress. Intern counselors also provide family therapy and assist with parent education classes and workshops to teach parents how to handle common concerns in childhood and adolescence.
YFS receives more than 150 applications every year for the 25 intern counselor placements. Fremont is fortunate to benefit from such talented volunteers. Thank you to the YFS intern counselors for your contributions to Fremont Families!

Recognizing Fremont Multi-Service
Senior Center Volunteers!
 | | Senior Center Volunteer Luncheon |
The Fremont Senior Center is extremely fortunate to have some of the best volunteers in the world. There are currently 160 volunteers who help out at the center on a regular basis performing such diverse tasks as preparing tax returns, teaching Tai Chi, directing traffic at our recent Expo, and performing as short order cooks for breakfast. The age range is also amazing: 14 years old to 96 years old. There were 18,743 volunteer hours worked in 2012-2013, which is equal to $438,961 if these were paid employees. This is definitely a "win win" situation, as recent studies have shown that isolation is a sure way to decline mentally and physically as we age. We really need each other!
To honor its many volunteers, on April 30th, the Senior Center staff cooked a barbecue lunch and handed out gifts and certificates. Fremont Senior Center could not function as it does without the invaluable help of its dedicated volunteers!

Community Ambassador Program for Seniors:
Site Coordinators Lead the Way to Serve Elders
 | CAPS Site Coordinators -- Back Row L-R: Krishnaswamy Narasimhan, Pragna Dadhbhawala, Jagmeet Kaur, Valree Clough, Lisa Dutra & Moina Shaiq Front Row L-R: Mira Malkani, Cordelia Shieh, & Myrla Raymundo (not in photo: John Hsieh) |
In 2007, a group of dedicated community leaders, well-respected and prominent in their own ethnic and faith communities came together and formed the Community Ambassador Program for Seniors (CAPS), an initiative initially funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and now an established program of the City of Fremont Human Services Department.
Today, this national award-winning, locally implemented program has grown to more than 10 organizations and over 80 volunteer ambassadors who work together to serve elders in locating resources related to health, housing, insurance, transportation, legal and immigration services. These dedicated volunteers are a bridge between their own respective communities and local senior service providers. Ambassadors conduct outreach via their churches, temples, mosques, gurudwaras, veteran's groups, and community and senior centers.
A very special thank you to our passionate and hard-working Site Coordinators, who have dedicated over 5 years to develop, grow, and sustain the CAPS Program!

New Class of Senior Peer Counselors Graduate!
 | | Senior Peer Counselors Graduation Ceremony |
On Friday, May 17th, 10 seniors proudly graduated from the training for the Tri-City Senior Peer Counseling Program. The new counselors are at least 50 years of age and represent the diversity of the Tri-City area. They received 54 hours of training with the Coordinator, Lis Cox, and are prepared to visit senior clients in their homes to offer emotional support for issues such as isolation, loss, anxiety, and depression.
Karen Grimsich and Dr. Ray Grimm represented Aging and Family Services in speaking about the program and congratulating the new counselors. Ray Grimm remembered the genesis of the program from more than 20 years ago and noted its great track record of offering emotional support over these many years. Graduates had written bios of their lives that were read by Lis Cox as the new counselors proudly received their graduation certificate.
Recent research findings have shown that loneliness, isolation, and grief can markedly shorten senior's lives and exacerbate a slide into serious depression. Understanding this, the Senior Peer Counseling program is a win-win-win, it helps isolated seniors in their homes, it offers seniors volunteers a challenging training and meaningful volunteer opportunity, and it supplies the Tri-Cities with a cost effective counseling service for seniors who might not otherwise request or allow counseling to help.
The program is sponsored by the City of Fremont's Aging and Family Services Division of the Human Services Department. Congratulations Graduates!

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Volunteers
 | | VITA Volunteers |
Since 2002, Fremont Family Resource Center's (FRC) Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program, has provided FREE quality tax preparation services to low and moderate income level families in Alameda County, serving primarily the residents of the Tri-City area. The VITA Program is part of the United Way of the Bay Area's Earn It! Keep It! Save It! Campaign to help eligible families receive their maximum refund amounts through Federal and State tax credits.
In addition to two staff employees, the VITA Program operates entirely with the help of wonderful VITA volunteers who come from all walks of life and serve as tax coaches, quality reviewers, tax preparers, screeners, greeters, ambassadors, translators, and office assistants. In 2002, the FRC VITA Program started with 38 volunteers, and served 226 families. This year, our 140 volunteers served 2379 families! Many of our volunteers return year after year.
The VITA Program would like to recognize the exemplary volunteer contributions of five volunteers who have been with FRC VITA since the inception. The volunteers are VITA coaches Johnny Yee, Genaro Mempin, Anthony Sapienza, and Michael Shapiro, and Julie Zhu, Fremont Bank representative. Over the past 11 years these five volunteers have contributed a total of 4,681 volunteer hours, which equates to a value of $115,855. We are grateful for your dedication, hard work, and spirit of volunteerism!
