Living Well - December 2015

Sea Festival of Trees - November 21 to December 6
to benefit Anna Jaques Hospital & the Salisbury Beach Partnership, Inc.
Anna Jaques To Offer MAKO™ Robotic Assisted Surgery, a New Alternative to Total Knee and Hip Replacement
For people suffering from knee and hip pain, a new alternative surgical procedure is bringing much-needed relief for some patients. Anna Jaques has purchased the RIO Robotic Arm Interactive Orthopedic System, enabling orthopedic surgeons from Seacoast Orthopedics and Sports Medicine North to perform MAKO Partial Knee Resurfacing and MAKO Total Hip Replacement procedures at the hospital. Anna Jaques is only the second hospital in the region to offer MAKO™ robotic-assisted surgery.

MAKO™ is an entirely different way of surgically treating osteoarthritis of the knee, particularly for patients living with early- to mid-stage osteoarthritis that has not progressed to all three compartments of the knee. Benefits to patients include:
  • Reduced pain
  • Shorter hospitalization (1 day vs. 3+ days)
  • More rapid recovery
  • Less implant wear and loosening
  • Smaller scar
  • Bone sparing
  • Rapid recovery
  • Better motion and a more natural feeling knee
MAKO™ also offers an alternative total hip replacement surgery. Patients can expect increased accuracy of placement of the hip implant which can reduce the likelihood of hip dislocation; consistency in leg length; potentially decreasing the need for a shoe lift; and longer lifetime of the implant.

Want to know if MAKO™ is right for you? Anna Jaques will offer free monthly seminars led by a MAKO-certified orthopedic surgeon at the hospital to share information about the surgery, and to answer questions. All seminars are 6:00pm-7:00pm in the Higgins Conference Room at Anna Jaques on the following dates:
  • January 11th with Dr. Steve Mattheos, Sports Medicine North
  • January 27th with Dr. Michael Wack, Seacoast Orthopedics
  • February 8th with Dr. Steve Mattheos, Sports Medicine North
  • February 23rd with Dr. Paul Chang, Seacoast Orthopedics
