Staff Spotlight: Jazmen Miller, Student Support Center
|

Jazmen Miller works for the Student Support Center but is on site at IDEA every day serving as the New Heights coordinator, thanks to a federal grant designed to support pregnant and parenting teens in school.
Why This Work Matters
The New Heights program is unique because it is one of the only school-based support programs for teen parents in the District. We know that some students drop out when they have children due to lack of support and the overall responsibilities that come along with being a parent. We work with mothers and fathers to improve attendance, put them on track for graduation, reduce repeat pregnancies, and help students access the resources they need to take care of their children. This program opens doors and allows students to see that there is still an opportunity for them to be successful.

Great Interim Results Key to DC CAS Success
Interims are assessments we give every 6 weeks to measure student learning. These exams also help us predict how students will perform on the DC CAS, an important exam that begins on April 22. Our seventh-, eighth-, and tenth-graders will take the DC CAS in English language arts and math. The DC CAS is a critical exam for student success because it measures how well they learned grade-level standards and how prepared they are for the coming year.
What is our goal for student performance on interims?
We believe that students who get a score of 70% or higher on our interims will be able to pass the DC CAS exam. Of course, we want all students to score well above this level, but it's critical that our students reach the 70% benchmark at a minimum.
How can I make sure my student is prepared for the DC CAS?
Our next Interim will take place on March 12 and 13. Remind your student about the importance of the interim as well as the upcoming DC CAS. When your student is working on homework, remind them to use strategies like RACERS and CATCH AND MATCH (they will know what you are talking about!). Encourage them to get lots of sleep and to eat well on assessment days. Most importantly, let them know that you believe in them! Please contact your child's teachers with any further questions about their performance.
