Thoughts from Pastor John
"Stewardship - It's Not Just About Money"

In the June Ministry Messenger, I shared principles 5 & 6 of 10 stewardship principles - they were "controlling our money" and "shaping lives through obedience." This month, let's look at (7) "seeking contentment" and (8) "faithful giving."

Seeking Contentment: The Apostle Paul knew both the secret of contentment and how to receive it. Read Philippians 4:10-13. Paul had learned the secret of contentment . . . of being satisfied with every circumstance in which God had placed him. Certainly our personal circumstances are different from Paul's, and certainly our society is different today. But it does seem that at one time or another, we fall victim to discontentment, the desire for more. You know the old saying, "the more you get, the more you want." Jesus spoke about this in Matthew 16:26, "What good will it be for a man if he gains the whole world, yet forfeits his soul." (NIV)

How often have we said, if only . . . owned a nicer home, had more money, married someone else, had a different career, belonged to a different church . . . the list is endless. Until we find contentment in Christ, we are going to continue our search for contentment in the wrong places.

Four truths to consider about contentment. They are:
  1. Determined by what is inside us, not the circumstances around us. In Christ alone we find contentment. (Mt. 11:28-30)
  2. Need-oriented, not want oriented. Contentment is impossible if we seek it only by having our wishes and dreams fulfilled. If we emphasize things, we will end up frustrated and depressed when we fail to acquire them. (Philippians 4:19)
  3. A matter of trust. When we really trust God, we believe in all situations He is in control and will take care of us. (Ps. 37:4-5)
  4. Responding to God's call. Don't we sometimes want to keep our earthly possessions - money, investment, time - for ourselves? When God wants something, we ignore Him. We forget He is the owner; our things are not our own.
Attitudes and Actions: Accumulating more will never be enough. Our relationship with Christ will make it possible for us to be content in all circumstances. Without Christ, we will never be satisfied.

Faithful Giving: We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give. Billy Graham is to have said, "God has given us two hands - one to receive with and the other to give with." The miracle of giving, which many have experienced, is the more we give, the more we receive. God's gifts to us are far greater than our gifts to Him.

Reasons for giving:
  1. We give to honor God as the creator of all things. All that we have is a gift from Him. We give offerings because we desire to express gratitude to God for His faithfulness.
  2. To demonstrate our commitment, love, trust and thankfulness. Giving is a witness that it is not a burden but rather a privilege, not to be seen as an obligation. God's grace empowers us to be faithful with our lives and resources.
  3. We are part of God's family, the church. Giving to the local church proclaims that the church is important to us and we want to be involved in its mission and ministry. Our churches are stewards of what we give to God.
  4. To grow as believers. When we are generous with our gifts, we acknowledge God's ownership of all we have, and we put trust in Him.
Martin Luther once wrote; "There are three conversions necessary for a believer: the conversion of the heart, mind and purse." You can always count on Luther to get right to it!

Attitudes and Actions: Our faithful giving honors and glorifies the Lord. The act of giving is found in both the Old and New Testaments. We are not to give out of duty but rather in faith and love for God. A foundational truth about Christian giving is that it comes from the heart . . . it is an expression of love and care.

May your walk with our Lord Jesus continue to be a blessing to you.

A few other notes to share . . .
Thank you to Diane Shildbach and John Phillips for being willing to serve on the LGB with the new term beginning July 1st. Please do pray for all your leaders of Our Savior Ministries as they work on your behalf in God's ministry.

Look for more information on Joining Jesus In His Mission in the days and weeks ahead. This will be a big focus of our evangelism that helps equip all people to share their faith. Five questions that help direct this effort that we as individuals can ask ourselves and more importantly, discuss within any group we may be involved are:
  1. How did you see God at work in your life this week?
  2. What has God been teaching you in His Word?
  3. What kind of conversations are you having with pre-Christians?
  4. What good can we do around here?
  5. How can we help you in prayer?
I will also begin a sermon series starting July 17th that will focus on these questions.

May you all have a safe and enjoyable 4th of July. We are grateful that we can celebrate all the many freedoms we have as Americans, but even more so, we rejoice in the freedom we have in Christ by a loving God.

Serving Him by serving you . . .

Chairman's Report
Thank you to everyone who was able to attend last week's Annual Voters' Assembly Meeting. We had a wonderful time of fellowship during the potluck and the meeting proved to be very productive (and hopefully informative, too). Here is a quick recap of the actions taken by the Assembly for those that couldn't attend.

1) John Phillips was elected and Diane Schildbach was re-elected to the Lay Governing Board. Their new terms will begin on July 1st.

2) The Voters approved the amendments to the Constitution and Bylaws for a second time. Most of the amendments were due to a change in the California Corporations Code. To summarize, the amendments were: to make the Pastor a permanent invitee to the Lay Governing Board meetings instead of an "ex officio, non-voting member"; to change the title of "Chief Financial Officer" to "Treasurer"; and to make the timing of Lay Governing Board officer elections more flexible.

3) The 2016/2017 Budget was approved and a commendation given to the administrative staff for all their hard work.

4) The original two-year term of Sara Agee's call was expiring soon, so the Assembly voted to convert her call from non-tenured to tenured.

In His Service,
Mark Miller, Chairman

Joining Jesus on His Mission
Joining Jesus on His Mission: "Come follow me." [Mark 1:17]
OSLM is going to be placing a major focus of our Outreach Ministry to help us realize our vision to "Touch the World." OSLM has partnered with Pastor Greg Finke of Dwelling 1:14 to help each of us become an everyday missionary. The first step is to learn and use "Take 10." Pastor John will teach us what it means to become an everyday missionary in a sermon series beginning July 17th. Through our community encounters, we will see God working through us and around us. These are "God-stories" and God-stories need to be told! That is where Take 10 comes in.

Take 10 is an opportunity during the first 10 minutes of a meeting, Bible study, walking club, dinner, etc. where we can share our God-stories. This sharing will help you "see" God working, will give you courage to let Him work through you, and inspire you to intentionally Join Jesus on His Mission!

Pastor Finke will be at OSLM on October 1 to conduct more training for the Mission! Plan now to attend!
Outreach Choir Report
On Saturday, June 4, the Outreach Choir from Our Savior went to two Senior Care Homes (Rosewood Gardens and New Haven) in Livermore to sing some fun, familiar hymns and songs.  It was a great way to bring some smiles and joy to those less mobile.  In addition, we gave each Senior a greeting card made by the students of Our Savior Lutheran School, and each individual also received a prayer book.  At each location, we gave an uplifting audio CD that the residents can "check-out" from their libraries to listen to as a way to lift their spirits.  It was a great way to share the love of our Heavenly Father to those unable to easily come to worship or even leave the centers. Thank you very much to all who participated in the Outreach Choir Events this year, with special appreciation to Thrivent for their support.

The Outreach Choir will take a break for the summer, but watch the worship insert and Ministry Messenger for dates and times that we will meet again in the fall!
Men's Network Breakfast
Men's Network Breakfast is continuing through the Summer. The breakfast on June 25th will start at 8:00 A.M. The breakfast on July 30th will start at 8:30 A.M. The study for June is from the Augsburg Confession and the July study will also be doctrinally sourced. Because of Summer vacations, the breakfasts will be on the lighter side but there will be no changes in the quality of program or fellowship.

News from Janet Volkman

June 2016

Dear Family and Friends,

"Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths." (Proverbs 3:5-6)

"If God is for us who can be against us?" (Romans 8:31)

Faithful God is my stronghold!

This year started in Guatemala, where I work in the capacity of an assistant to the pastors; organize and head up different outreach programs; help with youth and children ministries; and anything else that comes my way.
Then in the middle of March I left Guatemala to travel with Pastor Charlotte and return to Israel. Here we continue to pray over God's land, minister to many and help wherever we can.

The end of April found us once again in the Ukraine where Charlotte had been invited to preach in the church that she founded in 1993.
Easter Sunday service, which was held on May 1st as the Ukraine celebrates Easter on the Eastern Orthodox schedule, was a wonderful celebration of the power of the cross. It was held in the largest sports stadium in Kharkov. There were thousands in attendance. Many came forward to receive the Lord.

Charlotte is doing well. God gave her a strong preaching voice like before, as her vocal chords had been damaged during a quadruple bi-pass surgery a year ago July.

It was so wonderful to see how the church has grown and to see the familiar faces of many whose lives were changed by the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ.

I am now back in Israel and will probably return to Guatemala sometime late July.

I have been asked on more than one occasion...where is it that you like to be most...I can honestly say that where ever God has sent me and I have been privileged to be is where I want to be. There is nothing like serving the Lord and spreading The Gospel Message.

Thank you once again for uplifting my arms before the King of Kings!
I do declare the praises of the Lord from Zion!

Blessings, love in Him,
Janet

2015-1016 Theme Verse
"But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into  His wonderful light."  -- 1 Peter 2:9
