Beginnings and Endings

"I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End," says the Lord, "who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty."  Revelation 1:8

Our lives are full of beginnings and endings.  During the past few weeks, I have become more aware of how they exist together.  The scripture makes this point by referring to the Lord as the beginning AND the end!  He declares his infinity as past, present and future!  This all-encompassing presence is to be our comfort and our hope!

On a single day during the month of June, I officiated at the wedding of Rev. Sam Gordon (and Mae Washington) and later in the day sat with Mrs. Doris Jones, the wife of Rev. Glen Jones who had just died.  At the end of the day, I felt like I had gone the distance between a "beginning" event (the wedding) and an "ending" event (Rev. Jones' death). But as I reflected on both experiences, I was reminded of the Revelation 1:8 passage.

In reality, both events were both beginnings and endings.  Sam and Mae were ENDing their lives as single people to BEGIN their lives in marriage!  Rev. Glen Jones was ENDing his earthly life to BEGIN his eternal life!  Our faith and hope in Jesus Christ enables us to celebrate and grieve at the same time.  We can reminisce and rejoice at the same time.  We can look back, but go forward at the same time.

The tendency to see life's transitions as ONLY an end or ONLY a beginning is a limited view. As believers, we are invited to have a broader view, a more transcendent view, a perspective that we believe in an eternal Lord and savior who works in our past, present and future.  We are to learn from our past, but not stay there.  We are to live in the present, but not think that that's all there is.  We are to look forward to the future that affirms the words of Jeremiah 29:11 "For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord. Plans to prosper you and not to harm you. Plans to give you hope and a future."

During this annual conference season we find ourselves living with the reality of BEGINNINGS and ENDINGS side-by-side.  The end of one conference year is also the beginning of another conference year.  In all our doings this season, let us recall the words of Revelation 1:8 that remind us that all time is in the hands of the Lord.  He surrounds us in our finiteness with his infiniteness.  So whatever happens - wherever you are sent as pastors, whoever is sent to you as a congregation - let us celebrate and grieve, reminisce and rejoice, but most of all, let us live into the PLANS that the lord has for us to prosper and to always have hope as a people of faith!

"Faith and Fitness"  Updates

 The Bishop's Blog

June was not a good month for exercise for me.  I just could not seem to get back on schedule.  I am truly a creature of habit, but the least little thing throws me off!  But I really have no excuse,  because I could always exercise in the house or hotel room.  It's so hot, I'm just not motivated.  On the positive side, I am thoroughly enjoying the fresh fruits and vegetables of the season (and from the gardens of the churches and my friends)! Thanks!
