Santa Cruz High PTA Wins $4,900 grant

The Santa Cruz High Parent-Teacher Association has been awarded a $4,900 Toolbox for Education grant from the Lowe's Charitable and Educational Foundation. The grant will help fund Santa Cruz High's School Security and Restoration Project, a volunteer-led project to clean, repair and landscape the school's central quad area. The downtown campus has been degraded in recent years by lack of maintenance funds, and after-hours abuse by transients, campers and skateboarders.

The Santa Cruz City Schools District will install security gates in July to protect the campus core at night and on weekends.

The grant-funded cleanup work will take place as soon as the area has been secured.  Half of the grant funds will be spent on cleaning and maintenance equipment for ongoing use by community volunteers. The rest of the funds will be spent on landscaping supplies, including decorative boulders, and native shrubs and trees. Because of the ongoing drought, planting will be delayed until the rainy season.

For more information, please contact PTA President Maria Gaura at mgaura@cruzio.com, or at 831 429 6953.
