Seeking Volunteers to Treat the Teachers

It is a tradition at Santa Cruz High School for members of the PTA to bring "Breakfast Treats" into school once a month for the teachers and

staff as a surprise. Johanna Epps is looking for volunteers to help with this for the spring semester. If you would like to participate, please email her at epps.johanna@gmail.com  and she will fill you in on the details. Thank you to all of the parents who have helped with this in the past and thanks, in advance, to those of you who will help to carry on this PTA tradition of hospitality.

Counseling

Cabrillo College Running Start

Seniors planning to attend Cabrillo College next year should register to take the Cabrillo Assessment Tests on Thursday, February 20th at 2 p.m. at Cabrillo College. This is the first of two assessment times that will be reserved specifically for SCHS students. Certain scores on specific previous assessments (such as the Early Assessment Program, EAP) can exempt students from the Cabrillo Assessment tests; see the Cabrillo College Assessment Center website for more information. To register for the assessment tests and pick up an information packet, including a link to the online Intent to Participate in Running Start Form, come to the Santa Cruz High Counseling office.

Students will need to complete the online Cabrillo Orientation before the exam.  Students will also need to fill out the Cabrillo online application and prepare their class selection to take advantage of the priority registration date on Running Start, May 14th.

Prospective Cabrillo students are encouraged to consider joining a learning community or the Honor Transfer Program. There will be a presentation about the Honor Transfer Program at the Santa Cruz High Counseling Office during lunch (11:15 a.m.) on February 4th.

It is recommended that students make an appointment with a Cabrillo College counselor for assistance in selecting classes and completing an educational plan. Students may also see the Santa Cruz High counselors for some assistance in this process.

For further information please visit Cabrillo College's Running Start Information page at: http://www.cabrillo.edu/services/outreach/runningstart.html

Financial Aid and FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid)

Attention 12th graders and families of 12th graders: the deadline by which students must fill out the FAFSA and receive first consideration for the Cal Grants (a large source of California financial aid) is March 2nd, 2013. Some private colleges require the FAFSA be submitted sooner, along with an additional financial aid application called the CSS Profile (profileonline.collegeboard.com)

Most Santa Cruz High Students have their social security number on file with the school registrar so the GPA verification form will be submitted electronically by the Santa Cruz High School registrar. If the school does not have your student's social security number on file you will need to also submit a Cal Grant Verification form by the March 2nd deadline. For more information see http://www.calgrants.org.

Cabrillo College will offer assistance to students and family members as they fill out the FAFSA at their Cash for College event on February 8th from 9:00 a.m. -1:00 p.m. There will be presentations every hour on the hour and an open computer lab to assist in filling out the FAFSA.

2014-15 Course selection process for continuing students

Beginning February 11th, all Santa Cruz High School students will attend assemblies during 2nd period in the school auditorium where counselors will share information to help students with their class selection process for next year. Topics include high school graduation requirements, college entrance requirements, and academic planning. Students should bring home registration paperwork they receive at these assemblies. Please go over this paperwork with your students, sign off on the bottom of the form and have your students return the forms to their 2nd period teachers. Counselors will follow-up with brief one-on-one meetings with students in the weeks after the registration assembly. It is important students accurately list their first (and where possible, alternate) choices on the scheduling forms as the high school will use this information to determine staffing and course offerings.
