General News
Take Note! - Safeway eScrip Payment Change
Safeway has changed its eScrip policy:  As of November 1, purchases made with a credit card will no longer earn eScrip contributions.  Under the new policy, payments to Safeway must be made by cash, debit card, check, SmartCheck, Safeway Gift Card, WIC, or SNAP/CalFresh card in order for Santa Cruz schools to receive eScrip donations.  If you have normally paid by credit card, make sure you make the change!  EScrip is an easy, ongoing fundraiser for SCHS.  Participating businesses, including Safeway, contribute a percentage of all purchases to the local schools of your choice.

To sign up for eScrip, please see the instructions on the PTA website at http://schspta.weebly.com/escrip.html, or contact Melissa Gainer for help at Melissa@florance.net.

Thank You and Congratulations
Principal Karen Edmonds would like to thank the Gold Standard Chorus for its contribution to the SCHS choir program.
Counseling
College Applications
Remember that UC (University of California) and CSU (California State University) applications are due on November 30th.  If you haven't already, be sure to start working on your personal statements for the UC (and essays for private universities).

If you will apply to private universities, be sure to note the due dates.  Many are in January, but campuses vary so check the websites.  Also, plan ahead if you will apply under any early deadlines (e.g., early action/decision).  Remember that most private colleges require letters of recommendation.  Be sure to give teachers and counselors at least four weeks advance notice (four weeks before winter break if the deadline is when we return) to write the letters.

And, most importantly, please ask a counselor if you have any questions.  We're available by appointment as well as on a drop-in basis.  Call 429-3960 x300 for more information.

SAT/Subject Tests
The regular deadline for the December 7th SAT/Subject Tests is November 8th.  The regular deadline for the January 25th tests is December 27th.  For more information about other tests dates, registration and deadlines visit www.collegeboard.com and for questions about SATs and Subject Tests please contact the SCHS guidance office at 429-3969 x300.

ACT Tests
The regular deadline for the December 14th ACT is November 8th and the regular deadline for the February 8th ACT is January 10th.  For more information about other test dates, registration and deadlines, visit http://www.actstudent.org.

College Rep Visits
We continue to have college representatives visit in the month of November.  Please stop by the counseling office (or view the calendar on the SCHS website) to see the list of colleges visiting and get a pass to use on the day of the visit. Students from all grade levels are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity to learn more about colleges coast to coast.

Career Panels in Juniors' U.S. History Classes
November 21st:  Panels of preselected professionals will answer student questions and discuss their career paths, and the pros and cons of their career.  Snacks provided by the PTA!

College and Career Night at Cabrillo
Cabrillo College will be holding a College and Career Night on November 4 from 6:00 - 8:00 pm.  Meet college representatives, and attend presentations in college and career planning and financial aid.  For more information call 479-6427.

PTA
Announcing the PTA's 100 Year Anniversary Annual Giving Drive!

In the fall of 1913, when the original Santa Cruz High School burned to the ground, the Santa Cruz High PTA helped raise money for the beautiful main building we treasure today.  This fall, a century later, we are raising funds for campus safety, classroom supplies and new restrooms.

Our main goal for this year is to install security gates to close off the campus core at night and on weekends, preventing overnight camping, loitering and vandalism.  The PTA is working with Principal Karen Edmonds, the City Schools District and the City of Santa Cruz to improve campus security.

In addition, the PTA has pledged a minimum of $14,000 this year for classroom supplies - a $1,000 donation to each of SCHS's academic departments.  Generous donations to Annual Giving means more supplies and better equipment for our classrooms.

Finally, if our fundraising is successful enough, we have agreed to partner with the SCHS Cardinal Club and the City Schools District to install new bathrooms near the snack shack on Memorial Field.

Our Annual Giving appeal will be appearing in parents' mailboxes this week!  Please consider sending a donation to the PTA at 415 Walnut Avenue, Santa Cruz, CA  95060, or donate online at http://schspta.weebly.com.  The PTA is an all-volunteer organization of Santa Cruz High parents, and all donated funds go directly to support our campus community at Santa Cruz High.

Thank you parents!

Santa Cruz Composite Mountain Biking Team

The Santa Cruz Composite team is a cross-country mountain bike team for students who do not have a mountain biking team at their high school.  The Santa Cruz Composite team participates in the Norcal and CCCX races.  The team's goal is to get kids outside and biking while enjoying time with their friends.  There are a total of four coaches who ride with the team.  The practices (just started) take place at 4:00 pm Tuesday and Thursday, and 9:00 am Saturday - usually at Wilder Ranch, UCSC, or Nicene Marks.  Races are on weekends in the spring.  We travel for some races, and usually camp for overnight trips.  For more information contact David Giannini, davidgiannini@yahoo.com, or visit our Santa Cruz Composite Facebook page.

SCHS Cardinal Club Golf Tournament

Due to low golfer and sponsor turnout we had to cancel the annual golf tournament scheduled for November 14.  We will look into alternative fundraising as the year progresses.
