General News
Campus Safety
Two SCHS students are to be commended for their quick actions.  As a result of their awareness of an unidentified person attempting to photograph them as they were practicing cross country, the students made note of the suspect's license plate number and reported it to the SCPD.  SCHS also wishes to acknowledge the Commission for the Prevention of Violence Against Women for their work in training our students in self-defense.  This training goes a long way towards empowering our students to be aware of their surroundings.

Student Protest
Students chose to "stand in solidarity" with teachers on September 26 prior to the beginning of second period.  According to police estimates, about 150 students participated in the march to the clock tower.  Students were described as orderly and well-behaved.  They were accompanied by Campus Supervisor Richard Harris, and AP Henry Michel rode along with SRO Duarte.  There were additional SCPD officers riding along, ensuring that students were safe along the way.  (Thanks to the SCPD for their support).  Upon their return to campus around 10:40 am, students were directed to the quad, where they sat peacefully until the end of second period.

PSAT
All juniors will be taking the PSAT on Wednesday, October 16, at 8:00 am.  The fee is $20.  To sign up and pick up the practice booklet, see Jeannie in the Finance Office at lunchtime only. 9th and 10th graders may also purchase a PSAT on a first come, first served basis.

School Fundraiser
There will be a yard sale fundraiser Sunday, October 13, in the school parking lot to benefit the whole school.

Cosmetology Program
Students interested in enrolling in the cosmetology program their senior year must attend an orientation meeting ASAP.  These orientations are held the second Friday of each month from 3:30-4:30 pm at the Shoreline School of Cosmetology on 41st Ave.

Principal's Coffee Date Changed
The Principal's Coffee scheduled for October 7 has been rescheduled to November 4 at 8:00 am due to administrators visiting SCHS campus that day.

Thank You and Congratulations
Student Protest
In addition to Campus Supervisor Richard Harris, AP Henry Michel, and SCPD, Principal Karen Edmonds would like to acknowledge the efforts of Superintendent Gary Bloom and Assistant Superintendent Kris Munro, who also walked down to the Town Clock with our students! And to Directors Eileen Brown, Stacy O'Farrell, Jennifer Wildman, and the elementary principals who met at SCHS instead of their usual locale to provide additional support if needed.

The SCHS Marching Band would like to thank the parents who attended Back to School Night and gave so generously during their performance.  Your support is greatly appreciated!

Each senior named on the following list is a Commended Student in the 2014 National Merit Scholarship Program:  Benjamin Bacher, Gabriel Bloender, Hannah Cytron-Thaler, Eva Kurrtz, Bruin Pollard, Yuqin Shen, Tristan J. Wylde-Larue.  Congratulations!

SCHS College Night (Grades 9-12) "Creating Options in the College Search" Thursday, October 3, 6:30 pm.
Santa Cruz High is pleased to host College Night, featuring representatives from pubic and private universities.  The event will be simultaneously translated into Spanish.  It will begin with a panel presentation focusing on expanding college search choices, finding affordable options, and how to prepare for admission.  There will also be a Q&A session and a mini college fair.  Students and family members from all grade levels are invited to attend!

Private college representatives are coming
Check the Upcoming Events bulletin board by the Counseling & Career Center during September and October.  These visits are regularly advertised in the SCHS Bulletin, which is also available to parents/guardians online at www.santcruzhs.santacruz.k12.ca.us.  Interested students should pick up a teacher release card from the Counseling & Career Center and plan to attend the 30-45 minute presentations with private college representatives.

Letters of recommendation for private college applications
Many private colleges require students to submit one or more letters of recommendation from teachers, and also a letter of recommendation and school report forms from a guidance counselor.  If your student is planning to apply to any private colleges, please make an appointment with a Santa Cruz High counselor soon to make plans for the letter(s) of recommendation.  The guidance office also has a packet available with more information about letters of recommendation.

Performing Arts
The SCHS Marching Band is preparing for the Marching Season, which will kick off with the Santa Cruz Band Review on Saturday, October 19, when 55 high school and junior high school marching bands parade from Santa Cruz High School to the Boardwalk.  Volunteers are needed to help direct traffic.  Traffic volunteers need to be 18 years of older, and will receive 2 Boardwalk day passes at the end of their shift.  Email Diana Newcomb at dnewcomb@pacholo.com to sign up!

The Band is going to Hawaii for Spring Break!  Please support the band in their efforts to raise money for this trip.  They are selling Drive 4 Schools tickets, which can be purchased from any band member or by contacting 831BandBoosters@gmail.com.  General donations towards the Hawaii trip an be made at www.cardinalmusic.org or by check to "Band Boosters of Santa Cruz High School" (Hawaii is the memo), P.O. Box 7024, Santa Cruz, CA  95061.
PTA
Santa Cruz High Parents!  A summary of the first PTA meeting of the school year is now on our website, http://schspta.weebly.com.  This year the PTA is considering funding classroom supplies, campus security gates, and partnering with the District and the Cardinal Club to build restrooms near the field.  See our website for details!

Vice Principals Hatcher and Michel, and Principal Edmonds, receive $14,000 check for school supplies.
Donation for Classroom Supplies
The PTA just donated $14,000 to the school for classroom supplies, which doubles the school's classroom supply budget.  The donation, matching the school's allocation to each department, results in each academic department receiving $2,000.  The funds are an advance from the Annual Giving Campaign, so supplies can be available immediately.

Centennial Anniversary Annual Giving Campaign
The PTA is preparing to launch a special giving campaign to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the SCHS PTA.  Donation appeals will be arriving in parents' mailboxes in the next few weeks.  The primary goal of the campaign is to fund needed campus improvements - any amount is welcome!

Drive for Schools Fundraiser

The PTA kicked off the Drive for Schools fundraiser at Back to School Night on September 8, raising $745 in pre-sales, and aiming to raise $6,000 overall to benefit student clubs and activities.  Student clubs wishing to participate in Drive for Schools can keep ALL the money they raise in ticket sales!  Interested?  Contact Mary Tucker at mtuckerschs@gmail.com.  But hurry - the fundraiser ends October 20.

Sign up for Escrip!

Sign up for Escrip if you haven't already - SCHS received more than $20,000 from Escrip last year, and it cost parents nothing!  When you register your existing grocery loyalty cards, or debit or credit cards, participating merchants will contribute to the PTA each time you use the cards.  Go to our website at http://schspta.weebly.com/escrip.html for easy instructions, or contact Melissa Gainer for help at Melissa@florance.net.
