From the Director

This is an exciting week for the Chamber. Tonight, we partner with Kiwanis to host Governor Ricketts, Senator Kolterman and a host of VIPs at our annual Ag Recognition Banquet.  Agriculture adds so much to our local economy and culture. We are truly blessed to have such wonderful Ag families and Agribusinesses in Seward County.

Tomorrow, we will be a part of the Tri-County Job Fair with our friends from York and Fillmore Counties. By partnering with our regional counterparts, we increase Seward's exposure and give our employers the opportunity to attract new employees. Sue McHugh from the Chamber Board will be facilitating the Retail Committee meeting at 8:30 in the morning while I am at the event.

On Thursday, our friends at Seward County Economic Development will be hosting a Lunch and Learn covering trade show booth best practices. See the story below for details. The Fourth of July Committee meeting has been pushed back to 7:30 in the evening at the Civic Center to accommodate maximum attendance.

Next Monday, March 23, I'll be doing the Crossroads Caf Morning Show on KAWL promoting our 26th annual Spring Show. Tune in from 7:00-8:00 a.m.

The Visitor's Committee meeting will be held beginning at 3:45 at the Civic Center on Tuesday, March 24.

Join us Wednesday, March 25 for the much anticipated Southeast Nebraska Professional Development event at Seward Memorial Library. Covering topics important to business, this afternoon seminar will cover customer service, conflict resolution, identifying strengths and weaknesses and making the most of your time. Lunchtime keynote speaker is Kathy Plager, Executive Director of ServeNebraska, the Nebraska Volunteer Service Commission. Register for the day or just the keynote luncheon at www.nebraskaprofessionals.com.

On Thursday, March 26, we'll be promoting the Spring Show on KLKN midday news, and the show opens Friday afternoon at 4:00. For details on the event, check our constantly updated information at sewardne.com.

Congratulations to
Red Path Gallery & Tasting
Room and Liberty House B&B
for Selection into the Passport Program

The Nebraska Tourism Commission presents the 80 featured stops in the 2015 Nebraska Passport Program. The Passport program encourages travelers to explore Nebraska, collect stamps from participating attractions and earn great prizes.

The 2015 Passport will feature 80 attractions on 10 themed tours. Travelers have from May 1 through September 30 to visit attractions and redeem their stamps for prizes. For each completed tour, participants win a Nebraska Passport T-shirt. Travelers also can receive 20 $1 Nebraska Lottery Scratch coupons (for 20 stamps), a Travel Duffle Bag (for 40 stamps), and a Local First Gift Basket (for all 80 stamps).

A grand-prize drawing for an Omaha Steaks Culinary Calendar Package will be held in October. This year, an additional drawing for 300 $1 Nebraska Lottery Scratch tickets will be held for all participants, 19 and older, who turn in passports with at least one stamp.

Passports will be available at participating stops in May or pre-ordered by emailing [email protected]. Participants can also download the Nebraska Passport App for their smart phone and get stamped digitally rather than carrying around the paper passport. Please note, the passport app will be updated with the 2015 information at 12:01 a.m. on May 1. Those who used the application last year will need to download the update to see the new information.

Concordia's The Dog House Grill
Tasting Event, March 17, 3-4 pm

The Dog House Grill, a casual restaurant in the lower level of the Janzow Campus Center on Concordia University, Nebraska's campus, will showcase a new menu during an on-site event on March 17 from 3 to 4 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

"This new menu features the top sellers from our previous two years in business, as well as some new items that have been in hot demand as specials during this academic year," said Concordia's Director of Dining Services Bryan Scherbarth. "The students helped to create some of the new recipes, and they are excited that the campus community as well as the general public will have an opportunity to experience The Dog House as another quality local dining option."

The full menu from The Dog House Grill features American cuisine including cheeseburgers, sandwiches, wraps, wings with a variety of sauces, fries, milkshakes and smoothies.

The New Menu Party will feature samples of the establishment's new food items including the Spicy Double Cross Burger made with jalapenos and a sriracha aioli, the Tuscan Pesto Chicken Sandwich with melted provolone cheese on a toasted brioche bun and other specialty entres.

Samples of this month's featured milkshake, the Shamrock Shake, made with green mint chip ice cream, peppermint extract, whipped cream and a cherry, will also be available at the New Menu Party.

The Dog House Grill was open for service in the fall of 2013 by Chartwells, a leader in higher education dining services. It is open to students and the public from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. Friday, 5 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. Saturday and 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday.
