From the Director

Happy President's Day; for those of you enjoying a day off, I wish you a relaxing day. This past week has been eventful with the visit of Roger Barganier from the History Channel and our Seward County Booth at the home show at the Lancaster Event Center this weekend. Thanks to all who helped with both of these opportunities to promote Seward.

I also had the opportunity to attend meetings with representatives from the US Chamber and State Chamber.  A lot of focus is being put on education and how Chambers can help public and private schools help meet the needs of local employers. There has been a significant shift in attitude from even a decade ago. In the past, students were encouraged to leave an area for college training with the hopes we could entice them to return once they gained their experience. The focus now is to be able to offer them the training they need nearby for jobs that are available locally. There is also an increased focus on workforce housing and how critical it is to be able have workers be a part of our community whenever possible without them having to commute in.

Other items of note include:

  • We continue work on an Entrepreneurial camp for middle school students that will be held in conjunction with UNL extension, Seward County Economic Development and REAP.
  • We assisted the Seward County Visitor's Committee with a Red Carpet Meet and Greet with Seward County businesses on how they and their employees can better promote the area when visitors are in their establishments.
  • We enjoyed a great presentation from REAP on resources available for small business.
  • We continue planning for the Southeast Nebraska Professional Development Seminar to be held in Seward this March. See details at
    nebraskaprofdessionals.com
  • I was able to attend a training provided by Olsson and Associates on different avenues available for community improvement.
  • The First Impressions Committee continues their work on entrance signage for Seward.

Don't forget:

  • The Christmas Parade Meeting originally scheduled for last week has been rescheduled for tonight at the Civic Center, Room #2, at 7:00 p.m.
  • The Retail Committee meets in the morning at 8:15 a.m. at the Civic Center
  • The Women in Business Luncheon at Concordia on February 24.
