A Message from Our President/CEO
|

In addition to pursuing a mission of providing hope, creating opportunity, and transforming lives of men, women, and children who experience homelessness, SEARCH works to influence how our greater community can more effectively mitigate this complex problem. SEARCH is, therefore, very pleased with the recent announcement that Mayor Annise Parker appointed the city's first Special Assistant for Homeless Initiatives, Mandy Chapman Semple. Bringing significant expertise as a consultant with the well respected Corporation for Supportive Housing, Mandy is charged with developing strategies, in coordination with local partners, to end chronic homelessness in Houston. (Chronically homeless individuals are those who've been living on the street for a long time and suffer from very complex issues.) The Mayor's prioritization and investment in one of Houston's most difficult challenges are key to making needed sweeping change. Mandy's focus is to help Houston reorient our crisis intervention system that has been helpful, but still insufficient to help enough people exit homelessness, especially those with more complex needs. Rather than providing services to help people better succeed in obtaining permanent housing, we will reorient Houston's system to meet their housing needs first, then provide wrap around support to help them stabilize. SEARCH has been applying this principle for many years and has demonstrated that this practice generates stability faster and keeps people out of the more expensive crisis care system. SEARCH's work and strategy are aligned with the sweeping changes that are planned for our community. In fact, we have and will continue to take the first bold steps. In addition to helping people get back to work, SEARCH has made a commitment to serve the most vulnerable individuals, including preschool age children who were born into poverty and chronically homeless persons. We will focus and develop resources to expand and expedite success for more men, women, and children to achieve stability and ultimately a healthier, better future.
