Charity Makes All the Difference

It's time for the 2013 National Homeless Point in Time Count. SEARCH Outreach Team Lead, Charity Dominguez, will be leading the SEARCH team in her 6th year with the count!

The purpose of the count is to determine the number of homeless persons [defined by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) as those staying in emergency shelter, transitional housing, or safe haven with beds dedicated for homeless persons or those persons who are unsheltered (i.e., staying in a place not meant for human habitation)].

The count takes place January 22 & January 29. There are two types of people who participate. Surface teams count people who show characteristics of homelessness. The specialized outreach team actually interacts with those who are homeless.

"Our specialized outreach teams, go out into the community and actually go under bridges, in the bayous and in hidden areas, to actually look for encampments of groups of homeless individuals where we interact with them and see what they need."

"I admire and love how the community and agencies come together  to create this count. If it weren't for employees and community volunteers, none of this would ever be possible."

A Message from Our President/CEO
t-costis-v2

National leaders have been in a continuing debate about balancing the federal budget. Public resources are already starting to decrease and will continue to wane. Just this week, SEARCH learned that funds from one government source that supports our day shelter will reduce by 11%.

The US Dept of Housing & Urban Development (HUD) is increasingly shifting their resources toward supporting people in permanent housing and less in emergency or short-term programs. This approach---helping people make the transition toward independence starting with them living in supportive, long-term housing---is appropriate. As a community, we must continue to apply this more effective approach with less federal support to quickly end the homeless experience that affects more than 30,000 Houstonians each year.

Approximately half of SEARCH's budget comes from federal resources. The other half is contributed by the generous and much needed investments of individuals, companies, and foundations that support and believe in SEARCH's value. SEARCH has leveraged these private and public resources to help people successfully move from the streets, into jobs, and safe, stable housing. Whatever the results of these debates in the coming months, SEARCH remains committed to implementing the quickest and long-lasting assistance for people who are homeless to achieve a healthier, more stable life.
