A Message from Our President/CEO

Happy Holidays!

Happy holidays to all! Even during this joyous season, we remember how others in Houston lose hope...

A survey conducted by the Coalition for the Homeless of Houston/Harris County in Spring 2012 found that the top three triggers that ultimately lead to their homelessness were:

        1. Economic - job loss and bills exceeding income
        2. Family break down and domestic abuse
        3. Illness both physical and mental that interfered with daily activities

The greatest perceived unmet needs were for permanent housing, transportation, and dental care with over half of respondents reporting these needs. Clothing, vision care/eyeglasses, and food assistance are also important. 33% of respondents also indicated a need for mental health treatment; only half had received that care.

This list calls attention to the complications that extend the homeless experience. None of these triggers are easy to tackle. Many who experience homelessness lack sufficient skills to meet today's demanding and highly competitive job market. Complicated family make up dynamics create undue stress and disruptions. People who are sick depend on the public health system and find it difficult to get well and back to work.

No matter how challenging, SEARCH is committed to ending their homeless experience as quickly as possible.

As we approach the year end and our holiday celebrations, I know we'll be especially thankful for family and friends who bring us joy, for the work we have that makes our world better, and for our health that we can't take for granted. At SEARCH, we are thankful to you for sharing your support and caring with those who are facing some extraordinary difficulties at this time in their lives.

Thank you and here's to making more joyful memories in the year ahead!

Thank you,
