In October we co-hosted a screening of the award winning documentary "Lolita: Slave to Entertainment"with Sea Shepherd of Philadelphia.
Tim Gorski, film maker/director and David Kirby, author of Death at SeaWorld, were our very special guest, answering questions about Lolita and the current situation for other captive orcas.
It proved to be an educational evening, enlightening many people of the problems with keeping marine mammals in aquariums and amusement parks.
Lolita (aka: Tokitae): This beautiful whale was living in the Salish Sea off Whidbey Island, WA when she was taken from her family on August 8, 1970. Lolita was one of seven orcas captured that day - many others were killed - she was shipped to the Miami Seaquarium where she has been forced to perform tricks daily for the last 42 years. Lolita is confined alone, in the smallest orca tank in North America - a tank which fails to meet the US Department of Agriculture's (USDA) minimum standards for housing a whale of her size. |
Gigi recently took a trip to Florida to visit Lolita in her tank at the Miami Seaquarium. She is looking forward to sharing Lolita's story in schools and raising awareness about her heartbreaking situation. We believe it is vital to promote critical thinking about the use of animals in entertainment - decreasing the revenue supporting these parks is our only hope for ending this type of abuse.
