April 2015

Greetings Friends!

In spite of the spring showers April has been a productive month for CLL Global. We are excited about many of our upcoming events, as well as the outcome of our latest fundraising effort. We are planning a CLL patient forum to be held in Houston, TX in October 2015. We are also in the midst of planning our second Alliance meeting of the year, to be held in Sydney, Australia. And the CLL Global board is holding its semi-annual meeting on April 30. Keep reading for more details and look for updates on these and other events coming soon.
FUNDRAISING UPDATE

A Night of Wine and Art to Support CLL Global

Local Houston philanthropists Michael and Joy Doustan, in conjunction with Houston artist LeeAnne Domangue, recently hosted a fundraising event at their home benefiting CLL Global Research Foundation. LeeAnne created 14 original pieces of art for the event. In addition to direct donations made by many guests, fifty percent of the proceeds from the sale of each piece of art was then donated to CLL Global.

Attendees of the event included friends and family of Michael and Joy, MD Anderson Leukemia faculty and fellows, CLL Global board members, and of course our very own Dr. Michael Keating. Donations from the event are still being tallied but to date over $4000 has been raised for the foundation.

CLL Global is pleased to partner with our supporters through multiple mechanisms to increase awareness of the disease, raise funds to support cutting edge research and patient education events, and to bring together our incredible community of CLL survivors, family members, and caregivers. Please join me in thanking the Doustans and LeeAnne for their hard work and commitment to supporting CLL Global Research Foundation.

RESEARCH UPDATE
"Cancer: The Emperor of All Maladies"
A Ken Burns Documentary

Dr. Emil Freireich, legendary oncologist, MD Anderson physician, and CLL Global Board member, was highlighted in Ken Burn's latest documentary for his groundbreaking work in childhood leukemia. From 1955 to 1965 research performed by Dr. Freireich changed cancer treatment forever. He was the first to show that cancer could in fact be cured using combination chemotherapy. For his efforts he received the prestigious Lasker award. At 88, Dr. Freireich continues his work with CLL Global, serving on both the Board of Directors and several CLL Global scientific committees. We are fortunate to have him on our team as we work towards a cure for CLL.
THE HAPPENINGS

CLL Global to Host Upcoming Town Meeting for the CLL Community

For those who tuned in to the CLL patient forum held in Tempe, AZ in March, you know how exciting,  motivating and useful these events can be for patients, families and caregivers. If you missed the Tempe forum, have no fear. CLL Global, in conjunction with our partners at Patient Power, will be hosting a town meeting on October 25, 2015 in Houston, TX. CLL Global CEO Dr. Michael Keating will be available to provide the latest information on CLL treatment options, clinical trials and ways to improving quality of life for patients. There will also be a question and answer session. Don't live close to Houston? No problem. The forum will include a virtual option for participation online or in person.

THANK YOU FOR SUPPORTING US!

We are immensely grateful to all of our supporters for their dedication in helping find a cure for CLL. We continue to make strides towards achieving this goal, and in improving the lives of patients and caergivers while on our journey.

Sincerely,

CLL Global Research Foundation
