November 2014

During this season of thanks and giving, we want to thank each of you for helping us advance CLL research throughout the world! The last twelve months have been filled with good news to the CLL community. Three new drugs (ibrutinib, idelalisib and obinutuzimab) were all approved for CLL. It is so rewarding to know new treatment options are available for CLL patients.

Earlier this month, CLL Global's board of directors gathered for its bi-annual meeting; many of our investigators are now putting final touches on their presentations for the annual meeting of the American Society of Hematology.

This is always a busy time of year. We hope you are able to celebrate a day of thanks with family and friends. All of us at CLL Global are certainly thankful for each of you.
RESEARCH NEWS

Hematology Experts to Converge in San Fran

Hematologists look forward to many things this time of year. Of course, there is the Thanksgiving turkey and the holiday merriment. However, another key event marks the calendar each year- the annual meeting of the American Society of Hematology.

This year's meeting will take place Saturday, December 6 through Tuesday, December 9 in San Francisco. CLL Global will bring you interviews of CLL experts in conjunction with our partners at Patient Power.

We look forward to presentations on a variety of new agents including ABT-199, duvelisib, ulituximab and TGR-1201. We are also eager for updates on studies with recently approved agents such as ibrutinib and idelalisib. Specifically for ibrutinib, we will be listening carefully to the data presented on the use in 17p deleted patients, the use of anticoagulation and antiplatelet agents in patients treated with ibrutinib and the use of deuterated water labeling to show that ibrutinib blocks cell proliferation and promotes leukemic cell death.

We are probably biased but one of the highlights for us at this year's meeting will be the presentation of the 2014 Wallace H. Coulter Award for Lifetime Achievement in Hematology, to Kanti R. Rai, MD, of the Hofstra North Shore-Long Island Jewish (LIJ) School of Medicine. Dr. Rai,an active member of CLL Global's Scientific Advisory Board, is being recognized for his 50-year career combining landmark clinical leukemia research, steadfast commitment to education and mentoring, and exceptional patient care. Dr. Rai developed the "Rai" prognostic categorization in 1975; clinicians across the globe continue to use his classification system. He is a caring and compassionate doctor and a remarkable individual; we cannot think of a more deserving honoree.

THE HAPPENINGS

SEASON OF THANKS, SEASON OF GIVING

During this season of giving, we want to say thank you to each of you! Without your support, CLL Global would not be possible. If you are in the spirit, please consider supporting CLL Global with one of the opportunities below.

1) Cyber Monday: Forget about Black Friday. Look for amazing deals on Cyber Monday, December 1, and raise money for CLL GlobGoodShopal while you shop. Shop at your favorite stores online through GoodShop, designate CLL Global as your organization and a percentage of your purchase will be donated to CLL Global. Stores like Amazon.com, Best Buy and Macy's offer coupons and deals exclusive to GoodShop.  Visit GoodShop.com

 2) Giving Tuesday:  On Tuesday, December 2, individuals and organizations across the country and globe will join together for a day of giving. More than 10,000 organizations are participating in this campaign. Pease consider spreading the word about CLL GlobGIVING TUESDAYal to family, friends and co-workers. Some ways to celebrate and increase awareness include posting on facebook about your favorite cause, volunteering or making a donation to CLL Global on Giving Tuesday.

3) Put CLL Global on your gift wish list: Avoid receiving another fruit basket or holiday sweater this year. When family or friends ask what to give you this holiday season, suggest a donation to CLL Global in your honor. Such a gift would have a positive impact on your life and others in the CLL community.  Dr. Keating is requesting donations be made in his honor from his friends and family. Feel free to direct your friends and family to www.cllglobal.org or to email us at info@cllglobal.org

THANK YOU FOR SUPPORTING US!

Once again, we wish you a Happy Thanksgiving. May you have a wonderful holiday with your loved ones. We will be back in December with a report from the annual meeting of the American Society of Hematology. Until then, be happy & well.

Sincerely,

CLL Global Research Foundation
