As we approach the holidays, we are constantly reminded of the importance of a strong, faith-based community. I am grateful for being part of the Serra community, and I have enjoyed our recent alumni events tremendously.
From the winter alumni games to the presentation of the Junipero Serra Award to Fr. Tommy King '74, our fall alumni events strengthened ties and established bonds that transcend generations.
Wishing you and your family a very happy Christmas season and an outstanding New Year!

Fr. Tommy King '74 Receives Junipero Serra Award
|
The Junipero Serra Award was presented to Fr. Tommy King '74 on Tuesday, November 26 during a special Mass celebrating the 300th birthday of Fr. Junipero Serra.
Fr. Tommy was honored for his unwavering support of St. Boniface Church in San Francisco's Tenderloin neighborhood. Day in and day out, he serves those who are struggling. He comforts and encourages people from all walks of life. Fr. Tommy is gracious and compassionate, and has dedicated his life to helping others.
"As Fr. Tommy spoke, I felt that he surrendered to his heart's desire - his call to be fully alive," said Principal Barry Thornton, Ed.D. "This was the gift he offered to the Serra community - a gentle call to live a life fully alive in response to God's invitation of love. This call will be unique to each person, but will always be animated in the service we offer to others, especially the less fortunate." |
Alumni Sports Week Wrap-up
|

The Serra Alumni Sports Week was a great success. It began on Wednesday evening with the annual poker tournament and basketball game. Approximately 25 alumni laced up their shoes to play in the annual event.
On Thanksgiving morning, more than 30 water polo alumni played in the morning game. The odd-year alums beat the even-year alums by a score of 19-17. Quinn Curl '10 led the way in scoring with four goals. Mark Stemmey '82 (our oldest participating alumnus) protected the cage with 17 blocks.
Padres kicked off the annual alumni soccer game on Friday morning. This time, the alumni team won 3-2. Approximately 30 alumni participated in the exciting game. It was wonderful to see alumni from all decades on the field, especially our new Alumni Board Co-President Kris McAlavey '03.

The Serra community is celebrating the team's recent victories - particularly last Saturday night's CCS Semifinal victory over Bellarmine (28-17). Members of the Serra Music Department will present "Come and See the King," the 57th annual Serra Christmas Concert. The event will be held at 7:30 p.m. on December 11 in the Serra Gellert Auditorium.

First Thanksgiving for International Students
|
The Serra library was filled with cheery faces and the smell of Thanksgiving in the air a few weeks ago, when more than 70 international students from Notre Dame and Serra gathered to share a traditional Thanksgiving meal with their host families.
Organized by Serra International Program Director Keticia Danish, the night began with a quick history lesson, followed by a Thanksgiving prayer. Host families contributed traditional side dishes. Turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy and stuffing were supplied by Serra alumnus Gabe Esposto '95, owner of Esposto's Catering. For many of the international students, this was their first taste of Thanksgiving classic American dishes.
