On November 26, the Serra community will celebrate the 300th anniversary of our founder, Fr. Junipero Serra. During a special Mass, we will honor Fr. Tommy King '74 with the Junipero Serra Award for his unwavering service to St. Boniface Parish in the heart of the Tenderloin. Fr. Tommy exemplifies what it means to be a man of "faith, wisdom, service, community and leadership" - he lives those values every day. I hope that you will join us at this special Mass.
November will be an extremely busy month! I hope to see you at our Alumni Games November 27-29, beginning with the annual poker tournament and basketball game on Nov. 27. It's always a blast to reconnect with our fellow Padres! We invite you to join us at our upcoming events, which are listed on the left of this e-blast. Join Us for Novemberfest on November 23!
|
Novemberfest is just around the corner, on Saturday, November 23. This will be Serra's major fall fundraiser this year. The event will be held from 6 to 11 p.m., and it will replace our traditional annual auction. The theme for this exciting event will be similar to Oktoberfest, with celebratory touches of November. The evening will include music, singing, dancing, games and the very best cuisine.
Our primary focus will be the Novemberfest Grand Raffle. Our goal is to have 100% raffle ticket sales participation from students, alumni and parents of alumni. Raffle tickets are only $10 each, with a chance to win a grand prize of $10,000 cash! The second place prize is $5,000, and the third place prize is $2,500. You can also increase your chances of winning by purchasing a discounted book of 12 raffle tickets for $100. Additional ways you can help include: * Donating items such as wine, event tickets, sports tickets, gift certificates, etc. * Becoming a sponsor or underwriter

Fall Alumni Games November 27-29
|
Thanksgiving is just around the corner! Participating in the Fall Alumni Games is an excellent way to work off those extra holiday calories. Please join us for the Fall Alumni Games, which will be held November 27-29.
The alumni wrestling poker party will begin at 5:30 p.m. in the Serra cafeteria on Wednesday, November 27. The alumni basketball game will tip off at 7 p.m. in the Morton Family Gym. Come and watch our current Padres compete on the court against our seasoned alumni players!
On Thursday, November 28 (Thanksgiving Day), the alumni water polo game will begin at 10 a.m. in the new Serra pool.
Ready for some soccer? The alumni soccer game will kick off at 11 a.m. on Friday, November 29 on the Freitas soccer field.

Alumni Phoneathon December 4 and 5 |
The Alumni Phoneathon will be held on Wednesday and Thursday, December 4 and 5. Serra will be holding its annual Phonathon on December 4 and 5. Current Padres will be calling alumni to ask for donations to support the Padre Annual Fund. This fund exceeds $150,000 annually and supports extracurricular programs, financial aid, and classroom technology. Thank you for your support and for taking a call from a current student! |
Padres Row at Strides for Life

Members of the Serra Crew team recently participated in the annual Strides for Life Colon Cancer Foundation Run at Lake Merced. The run is a fundraiser that honors Serra alumnus Dylan Cappel '96, who rowed for the University of Wisconsin and the U.S. National Team before falling victim to colon cancer at the age of 23. The Serra crew team participates in the four mile run every year, and helps to run the event annually, along with other local crew programs. Junior Jake Sanders won the award for fastest time among high school rowers.
"The legacy of Dylan is still alive and well on our team," said Serra Head Crew Coach Adam Jones. "It is a great event, and we hope to get more students from Serra to participate next year."

Just Like Dad: Ryan Fitzgerald Broadcasts for Serra

Serra sophomore Ryan Fitzgerald has the broadcasting bug in his genes. He is following his father, Serra alumnus Bob Fitzgerald '84, into sports broadcasting. Fitzgerald was recruited by Serra junior Robert Deiters to join the Network School Broadcast Program, which supplies schools with the software and resources needed to produce TV-like events. Fans watch these events on school portals.
"It's pretty fun," Fitzgerald said. "Right now, we broadcast the football games and water polo matches." Although Fitzgerald is only in his first year of broadcasting, he has grown up in the business. "I really like broadcasting, " he said. "My dad is a sports broadcaster, so I have learned things from him. Plus, it's great to have hands-on experience."

Mike Callagy to Serve as New Deputy County Manager

Serra alumnus Mike Callagy '80 is San Mateo County's new deputy county manager. The former San Mateo deputy police chief is looking forward to his new position.
Callagy served the police department for nearly 29 years. He has a master's degree in public administration from Notre Dame de Namur University in Belmont, and a law degree from Santa Clara University.Congratulations, Mike!

Second John Kelly Book-signing November 20
|
A second book-signing event to honor John Kelly will be held from 5 to 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, November 20 at the Foster City Library.
San Mateo County author and former public official Tom Huening has written a book on John's life, John Kelly Samaritan. John Kelly has spent his life serving others. A remarkable person who is beloved by so many, John was a priest, teacher, dean and chaplain at Serra from 1956-1972 and 1977-1979. As the director of Samaritan House, he changed lives and offered hope to people who were battling life's challenges.
The book-signing will be held at the Foster City Library and Community Center (2nd Floor, Wind Room), 1000 E. Hillsdale Blvd. in Foster City. CLICK HERE for a flyer. Fr. Tommy King '74 to Receive Junipero Serra Award

 The Junipero Serra Award will be presented to Fr. Tommy King '74 on Tuesday, November 26 during a special Mass celebrating the 300th birthday of Fr. Junipero Serra.
Fr. Tommy makes a difference every day by making people feel welcome at St. Boniface Church in San Francisco. In the heart of the Tenderloin neighborhood, Fr. Tommy listens to his parishioners' struggles, prays with them and offers them a sense of hope.
