Mongols on the Music Scene

Matt Pritchett '10 and R.J. Newkirk '10 recently toured Central America with their band, The Mongols.

"We went on tour for two weeks in Guatemala," Pritchett noted. "We played three cities and five shows. It was a blast and a great cultural experience to play abroad!"

It was the band's first international tour since it debuted in 2006. Although The Mongols played to a predominantly Spanish-speaking crowd, their alternative rock 'n' roll music appealed to the locals. So much so that they were asked to come back a second night after playing at the popular Pana Rock Cafe in Panajachel. A crowd of more than 200 danced the night away and sang the lyrics to The Mongols' popular hit, "That was Then and This is Now."

When Pritchett and Newkirk aren't touring with the band, they are enjoying college life. Newkirk is attending the College of San Mateo. Pritchett is majoring in English, minoring in communications and playing on the men's water polo team at Santa Clara University. (In fact, one of his roommates is Padre Jeff Kunkel '10).

Varsity and JV Wrestlers Clinch WCAL Titles

The Serra Padre wrestling team clinched WCAL championships on the varsity and JV levels on Wednesday night, with a win over Sacred Heart Cathedral Prep. Both teams finished undefeated at 6-0. The freshman team finished the season at 5-1.

Wednesday's match was Senior Night, and the senior wrestlers led the way to the Padres' third WCAL title in program history. Jon Beering won by a pin. Elias Hernandez, Jerry DeLaRosa, Phil Becerra and Chad Thodos won by major decisions (more than eight points). Chris Ippolito and Jimmy Millington won by forfeit. Next up for the Padres: WCAL individual championships on Saturday. GO PADRES!!!

Alumni Spotlight
Dominic Campodonico '86 Coaches Serra Mock Trial Team

As a health care attorney, Dominic Campodonico '86 represents biopharmaceutical industry clients who create products to help people feel better. He also assists people who can't afford legal services. "My years at Serra instilled in me a love of the law and the desire to help others," said Campodonico, a partner at Gordon & Rees LLP. "My instructors and coursework at Serra also taught me discipline and how to think analytically, which are important skills necessary to succeed as an attorney."

Campodonico's connection to Serra didn't end when he graduated. He still walks the halls - this as one of the coaches for the Mock Trial Team. From September through February, he works with 20 to 30 students to fine-tune their analytical and presentation talents. "I'm using the skills I first learned in high school to teach the students the art of advocacy," Campodonico noted. "I also guide them through the complexities of courtroom trial techniques.  We may live in the digital age, but being able to communicate one-on-one is still essential in the real world."

Campodonico reinforces the importance of teamwork and unity. "Many of the students who have been involved in Mock Trial are Serra athletes on the swimming, wrestling, crew, lacrosse, cross country and football teams," Campodonico noted. "Others have been involved in theater, chorus and robotics. High school can be a polarizing, cliquish experience. Yet, despite their differences, the students learn how to compete and work together for Serra and for each other."
