Opportunities are available for undergraduate pre-medical and pre-dental students to job shadow within certain Kirksville clinics.

Job Duties:

  • Diagnose and treat injuries and illnesses 
  • Examine patients 
  • Take medical histories 
  • Order, perform and interpret tests 
  • Prescribe medication 

 

Average Salary (2012): $187,200 per year, or $90.00 per hour


Predicted Job Growth
: 18% (faster than average) from 2012 to 2022.

Important Qualities

 

Communication skills- It is important to be able to communicate with patients and coworkers.

  

Compassion- Physicians and Surgeons must be able to treat patients and communicate with family members in a compassionate way.

 

Leadership skills- Physicians must be able to manage their staff and run their practice. 

Organizational skills- Many physicians and Surgeons are in charge of their own practice. They will need to keep records and stay organized. 

Patience- Physicians and Surgeons work long hours and sometimes deal with patients that have fears about their treatment. 

Problem solving skills-Sometimes fast decisions need to be made in order to save someone's life.

"Journey of the GI System"  

Learn about the various functions of the gastrointestinal system through a dissection of a fetal pig. Figure out how waste leaves the body and learn about other necessary body functions.

"Follow Your Heart" 

Let your heart be your guide as you follow the pathway of blood circulating in the body. Living life takes a lot of heart. Come learn about what this means.

Reservations are REQUIRED, and seating is limited to 40, so register early!
 
Student Fee: $20 per session*

The fee includes a pre-course assignment, hands-on instruction from ATSU-KCOM medical student fellows, lecture notes, assessment, snack, and the use of dissection equipment and specimens.

The Kirksville Workshops will be held LIVE! at A.T. Still University - Microbiology Lab in the Couts Building (800 W. Jefferson St, Kirksville MO).
