Job: Medical Records & Health Information Technicians

 

Job Description: Organize and manage health information data. They ensure its quality, accuracy, accessibility, and security in both paper and electronic systems. They use various classification systems to code and categorize patient information for insurance reimbursement purposes, for databases and registries, and to maintain patients' medical and treatment histories.

 

2012 Median Salary: $34,160


Predicted job growth
:Increase by 22% by 2022 (much faster growth than average)

 

Education: Postsecondary certificate and associate's degree programs in health information technology typically include courses in medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, health data requirements and standards, classification and coding systems, healthcare reimbursement methods, healthcare statistics, and computer systems. Applicants to health information technology programs increase their chances of admission by taking high school courses in health, computer science, math, and biology.  

Important Qualities

  • Analytical Skills: Must be able to understand and follow medical records and diagnoses, and then decide how to best code them in a patient's medical records. 
  • Detail Oriented: Must be accurate when recording and coding patient information. 
  • Integrity: Work with patient data that are required by law to be kept confidential. They must exercise caution when working with this information to protect patient confidentiality. 
  • Interpersonal Skills:
    Need to be able to discuss patient information, discrepancies, and data requirements with other professionals such as physicians, finance and insurance personnel.  
  • Physical Strength:
    Must be able to learn and use coding and classification software and the organization's Electronic Health Record (EHR) system.

HIT THE ROAD FOR HEALTH CAREERS
June 12-13, 2014
Don't forget to R.S.V.P. for the 2014 "Hit the Road for Health Careers:" A.T. Still Univerity & Truman State University Campus Visit Day event!

This two-day event features ALL hands-on, 
skill-based activities for high school juniors and seniors, and any student in collegeIt is where health care professionals bring passion about their field, and meet students from across the state that are simmering with excitement about the possibility of their future in a health career.

Students will participate in hands-on activities... things that health care professionals do every day. Things like testing hearing and fitness, assessing a patient, or surveying a scene to detect potentially dangerous situations, and learning by interacting with real patients!

This event has 2 tracks*:
  1. Undergraduate Health Programs - focused on allied health careers and nursing; primarily on the Truman State University campus with events at A.T. Still University as well.    
  2. Graduate Health Programs - focused on a day in the life of a medical or dental student; all activities occur on the A.T. Still University campus. 

*Students are free to choose their own track! 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The fee for the event is $20 for commuters, or $40 with housing. The fee includes instruction, all meals, transportation and housing if you choose that option.

2014 M*A*S*H Camps
...coming to a county near you!

Missouri AHEC Science & Health (M*A*S*H) camps are two-day "hands-on" science and health summer day camps for students entering 6th, 7th, and 8th grades; aimed to spark an interest in healthcare and science prior to high school coursework. 
 
Camp instructors include health professionals, health educators, and faculty from area high schools and colleges. Students participate in a variety of activities including chemistry/biology labs, scrub/dissection labs, Emergency Medical Service demonstrations, hospital tours, and other healthcare career activities.

The camp fee of $40.00 includes the following:

  • two-day camp instruction
  • classroom materials
  • lunch & snacks
  • M*A*S*H Camp t-shirt
  • group photos, and MORE! 

**Scholarships are available to those with a financial need. For more information, please call our office.

National HOSA Leadership Conference
June 25-28, 2014

Ten NEMO AHEC HOSA students and five school advisors will attending the National HOSA Leadership Conference (NLC) this June in Orlando, Florida. 
 
We have representatives from the following schools/organizations attending NLC:
