Field: Therapy

Job: Occupational Therapy              Assistant (OTA)

Job Description: Help patients develop, recover, and improve the skills needed for daily living and working. OTAs are directly involved in providing therapy to patients. An OTA works under the supervision of an occupational therapist.

2012 Median Salary: $48,940

Predicted job growth
: Increase by 41% by 2022 (much faster growth than average)

Education: OTAs typically need an associate's degree from an accredited program. OTA programs are commonly found in community colleges and technical schools. The programs include classroom instruction in psychology, biology, and pediatric health. OTAs also much completed 16 weeks of clinical fieldwork as part of their education.

Important Qualities

  • Compassion: Typically work with patients who struggle with many of life's basic activities. An OTA needs to be compassionate and caring, with the ability to encourage others.
  • Detail Oriented: OTAs must be able to quickly and accurately follow instructions (written & spoken) from an occupational therapist.

The NEMO AHEC HOSA students traveled to Union on the 24th, and spent the night at a hotel together. The 25th was a long day of round 2 competitions, listening to a guest speaker, and waiting for results...all of the advisors were very proud of how everyone performed at the state competition.

The NEMO AHEC HOSA Chapter is proud to report that 8 of our competitors medaled in their competitive event, and

Exploring a Career in Dentistry & Oral Health Workshop...a Success!
On Saturday March 22, 2015, 11 high school seniors and undergraduate students were invited to explore their interest in a dental health career.

"Explore a Career in Dentistry & Oral Health" was hosted by NEMO AHEC, A.T. Still University, and the Northeast Dental Clinic (Northeast Missouri Health Council) at their facility in Kirksville.

Students toured the new dental facility and were able to work with the dentist, hygienist and staff of the dental clinic. They participated in many "hands on" procedures such as digital x-rays and intraoral pictures, impressions, stone pour ups of impressions, electronic records & charting, as well as oral hygiene skills by practicing on each other.

Funding for this project was provided in part by the Missouri Foundation for Health (MFH), a philanthropic organization whose vision is to improve the health of the people in the communities it serves.

"Your Body Language Shapes
Who You Are"
"Body language affects how others see us, but it may also change how we see ourselves. Social psychologist Amy Cuddy shows how "power posing" - standing in a posture of confidence, even when we don't feel confident - can affect testosterone and cortisol levels in the brain, and might even have an impact on our chances for success
