Health Career Spotlight
|
Field: Eye Care
Job: Optician (Dispensing)
Job Description: Dispensing opticians help fit eyeglasses and contact lenses, following prescriptions from
ophthalmologists and optometrists. They also help customers decide which eyeglass frames or type of contact lenses to buy.
Average Salary: $32,940
(May 2010)
Predicted job growth: Increase by 29% by 2020 (much faster growth than average)
Education: Opticians typically have a high school diploma or equivalent, and some form of on-the-job training. Licensure also is required in some states. Missouri does NOT require licensure.
Opticians typically learn job skills through formal on-the-job programs. This training includes technical instruction in which, for example, new opticians measure a customer's eyes or adjust frames under the supervision of an experienced optician. Trainees also learn sales and office management practices.
A number of community colleges and technical schools offer formal education in opticianry. Some award an associate's degree, which takes 2 years. Others offer a certificate, which takes 1 year.
Coursework includes classes in optics, eye physiology, and business management, among others. Students also do supervised clinical work that gives them hands-on experience working as opticians and learning optical mathematics, optical physics, and the use of precision measuring instruments.
Important Qualities -
Communication Skills:
Must be able to listen closely to what customers want, and explain options and instructions for care in ways the customer will understand.
-
Customer Service Skills: Since most opticians work in stores, they must answer questions and know about the products they sell. They interact with customers on a personal level, fitting eyeglasses or contact lenses. To succeed, an optician must be friendly, courteous, patient and helpful to customers.
-
Management Skills: Opticians are often responsible for the business aspects of running an optical store. They should be comfortable making decisions and have some knowledge of sales and inventory management.
-
Manual Dexterity:
Opticians frequently use special tools to make final adjustments and repairs to eyeglasses. They must have good hand-eye coordination to do the work quickly and accurately.

ATSU's Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine and Missouri Area Health Education Centers present M.E.S.A., a distance learning opportunity for high school students interested in health careers!

This interactive distance learning series provides a hands-on educational opportunity to enhance skills and to academically prepare and motivate high school students who are interested in healthcare careers. RSVP by Friday, April 4 (Snow Date: April 22)
An exploration in why we are all different using the dissection of a cow's eye, and a genetics kit! We will look at genetics and inheritance patterns that determine eye color, taste, and other features that make us all unique.
The Kirksville Workshops will be held LIVE! at A.T. Still University - Microbiology Lab in the Couts Building (800 W. Jefferson St, Kirksville MO).

Optician Certification Information
&
Training in Missouri
|
Missouri has no government organization that is responsible for setting and enforcing optician training, certification, or licensing requirements. Since there are a wide range of optical employers, it is not uncommon to find a variety of skill sets among opticians in this state. Some large employers only train opticians in the basics of the job while other employers will provide training that is comprehensive.
Employers will usually arrange for newly hired opticians to be trained by experienced opticians who work in the same office. Some of these employers choose to only train opticians to perform tasks that are very basic including retail sales strategies and minor frame adjustments. It is important for opticians to understand that, in these settings, they may not receive the kind of comprehensive training that comes with certification.
Some optical employers actively encourage their opticians to voluntarily complete the American Board of Opticianry (ABO) and National Contact Lens Examiners (NCLE) Certification Examinations. These employers may even offer to pay the fees associated with the exams and reimburse for the costs of review materials.
