Field: Dental Health 

 

Job: Dental Hygienist

 

Job Description: Dental Hygienists clean teeth, examine patients for oral diseases including gingivitis, and provide preventative dental care. Dental Hygienists also provide patient education to help their patients improve and maintain their oral health.

 

Average Salary:$68,250

                            (May 2010) 


Predicted job growth
: Increase by 38% by 2020 (much faster growth than average)

 

Education: Minimum requirement of an associate's degree in dental hygiene to enter into the occupation. Certificates, bachelor's degrees, and master's degrees in dental hygiene are also available but are less common among dental hygienists.  Every state requires dental hygienists to be licensed; requirements vary by state. In most states, licensure requires a degree from an accredited dental hygiene program and passing written and practical examinations.

 

High school students interested in becoming dental hygienists should take courses in biology, chemistry, and mathematics. Some dental hygiene programs also require applicants to have completed at least one year of college. Specific entrance requirements vary from one school to another.

 

Important Qualities

  • Compassion: Sometimes patients can be in pain or mental stress during the appointment, and hygienists need to be able to be sensitive to the patient's emotions.
     
  • Detail oriented: Follow specific rules and procedures to diagnose and treat a patient. 
     
  • Dexterity: Must be good at working with their hands. Generally work in tight spaces, on a small part of the body, and use very precise tools.
     
  • Interpersonal skills: Work closely with dentists and patients.
     
  • Stamina: Dental hygienists need to be comfortable performing physical tasks such as bending over patients for an extended period of time.
     
  • Technical skills: Must understand how to operate complex machinery including an x-ray machine and powered instruments.

Fall MESA Dissections
(Medical Explorations in Science & Anatomy)

ATSU's Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine & Missouri Area Health Education Centers present M.E.S.A., a distance learning opportunity for high school students interested in health careers!

  

This interactive distance learning series provides a hands-on educational opportunity to enhance skills and to academically prepare and motivate high school students who are interested in healthcare careers. Within each session, a comparison will be made between mink, cow specimens, and human anatomy, so students can appreciate the similarities and differences that exist.

 

FALL Dissections

"Once Bitten"- October 22, 2013, 5:30-8:00pm
RSVP by Friday, October 18 (Light meal will be served)

An exploration of our mouths during the chewing process. Dissection of the mink will include the removal of teeth and visualization of the muscles involved in chewing. Get your mouth guards ready...this one's sure to be fun!

 

"Just Breathe" - November 12, 2013, 4:30-7:00pm
RSVP by Friday, November 8

Dissection of a mink, and a cow heart & lungs will allow you to explore the cardiovascular and respiratory systems. Air goes in and out... blood goes around and around...but how? And why? Come learn the "ins and outs" of these processes you cannot live without!

The fee includes a pre-course assignment, hands-on instruction from ATSU-KCOM fellows and medical students, lecture notes, assessment, snack, and the use of dissection equipment and specimens. *Discounted registration vouchers available ($5/student)

2013 T.E.A.C.H. Academy
(Teachers Exploring & Advocating Careers in Health)

The 2013 T.E.A.C.H. Academy was hosted by NEMO Area Health Education Center (NEMO AHEC) at A.T. Still University on August 6th and 7th. The T.E.A.C.H. Academy is an instructional and experiential program or HOSA advisors, high school educators, guidance counselors, and school nurses. The Academy is designed to promoted health career advocacy. This year, we had 8 participants from Kirksville, Newtown-Harris, Knox County, and Atlanta.

 

Participants were provided a unique opportunity to explore health care through the lens of practitioners and their workday. Additionally, The T.E.A.C.H. curriculum provides instructional tools, activities, and information educators can utilize to motivate students who are interested in healthcare careers.

Local Dental Hygienist at Northeast Missouri Health Council describes her career

In the two-day workshop, participants were able to attend guest lectures on particular health careers, healthcare professional shortages, predicted trends in healthcare, and how to better prepare high school students for future careers in healthcare.
 
 
Participants also toured the Northeast Missouri Health Council, and Truman State University's Athletic Training Facility and the Nursing Simulation Center.
