National Wear Red Day:
February 1, 2013

The American Heart Association is encouraging everyone to wear red on Friday, February 1, 2013 to support Wear Red Day and increase awareness of heart disease, the No. 1 killer of women.

Sadly, heart disease claims the lives of one in three women - almost one death per minute. The exciting news is that nearly 80 percent of cardiac events in women can be prevented, if the right choices are made.

Wear Red Day is a component of Go Red For Women, the American Heart Association's national campaign to raise awareness of heart disease in women. One day a year, what you wear really can be a matter of life and death. Millions of Americans will choose to wear red on Feb. 1 and show their commitment to the fight against heart disease and stroke.

"Dr. Lovy was phenomenal!"

Dr. Lovy lecturing on PTSD
Andrew Lovy, DO, F.A.C.N.

The response from attendees at Dr. Andrew Lovy's presentation,  "The Demons Are Back: PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder) in Older Adults", was a resounding "EXCELLENT".

A.T. Still University medical students, community mental health care professionals, as well as staff, found the information "enlightening" as Dr. Lovy offered "amazing new insights" to understanding those who suffer from PTSD.

Other comments from the lecture feedback forms included:

"Dr. Lovy made us understand the signs/symptoms of PTSD and the severity of ignoring these."

"Dr. Lovy has an infectious enthusiasm - his descriptions of PTSD experiences were vivid and useful. It will be valuable to have his knowledge/suggestions in mind as I care for the elderly."

"Dr. Lovy was so passionate about the topic."

Dr. Lovy's presentation was part of National Primary Care Week held on the ATSU campus in Kirksville in November. For more information, contact Becky at bdawson@nemoahec.org .

New Facility Opens

The Northeast Missouri Health Council is proud to announce the opening of its newest healthcare facility located at 402 W. Jefferson St. in Kirksville.   Funded in part by HRSA's Affordable Care Act - Capital Development Grant, the state-of-the-art building offers more than 26,000 square feet and became the new home to Northeast Dental, Northeast Pediatrics, and the OB/GYN Specialty Group.

Northeast Dental expanded to a 12-chair dental clinic, including an operatory equipped with a wheelchair tilting device. The Versatilt tilting device eliminates the challenge of chair to chair transfers for the dental patient and provides improved treatment for the patient by putting them in a more relaxed position.

The OB/GYN Specialty Group almost doubled in space adding an additional six rooms including a procedure room and private consult/nursing room.

Northeast Pediatrics also increased its clinic space and number of exam rooms.

The expanded patient-centered environment with a total of nine providers offers a wide range of health care services and accepts most private insurances, Medicaid, and offers a sliding fee scale.

Life Care Center of Brookfield -
Achieves Company's Gold Rehab Standard

Life Care Center of Brookfield, Mo., recently achieved Gold rehab standard in parent company Life Care Centers of America's 111-point quality audit.

Each Life Care building undergoes an annual audit of its core rehab program, assessing how the team works with other departments to provide a cohesive plan of care. Auditors (regional rehab associates with Life Care) score the rehab teams on four key areas: environment, human resources, clinical programming and systems management.

Facilities that achieve Gold standard are shown to have a strong, stable therapy team that is eligible to develop a specialty program based on the community's needs.

"Our rehabilitation department strives for excellence in clinical programming, professional development and customer service," said Megan Courtney, rehab services manager at Life Care Center of Brookfield. "Life Care supports us in staying up-to-date with the most current treatment techniques and technology to give the best possible care. With great teamwork and compassion for our residents, we were able to attain this Gold level."
