New Dental Clinic Opens

The Northeast Missouri Health Council (NMHC) recently opened the doors to its new state-of-the-art building in Kirksville.  The building will house its Northeast Pediatrics, OB/GYN Specialty Group and Northeast Dental clinics.

The $4 million building, funded in part by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Health Resources and Services Administration's Affordable Care Act - Capital Development Grant, began hosting dental patients October 29.

The dental clinic specifically will work closely with its future neighbor, the new A.T. Still University School of Dentistry and Oral Health, providing opportunities for students to learn and gain experience in an expansive space that features the newest technologies and patient comforts.

The new building will expand the number of active dental chairs from seven in NMHC's current clinic, to 12, with the possibility of increasing to 18 in the future.

One room has equipment for patients confined to wheel chairs. A machine will allow those patients to remain in their chairs while being positioned in a way to afford dentists an optimal view of their teeth.

Oral Health Alliance

Building on long-standing community relationships, an Oral Health Alliance was recently formed in northeast Missouri to help improve the oral health of vulnerable/ underserved pregnant women, infants, and children, and medically challenged, in a rural six-county region of northeastern Missouri (Adair, Clark, Knox, Lewis, Schuyler, Scotland counties).

The Oral Alliance is comprised of six member agencies including the Northeast Missouri Health Council, Adair and Clark County Health Departments, NEMO AHEC, Northeast Regional Medical Center, A.T. Still University Missouri School of Dentistry and Oral Health.

The mission of the Oral Health Alliance is: Believing oral health is essential to overall health and well-being, this regional partnership is dedicated to engaging the public through prevention, education, and local access to compassionate care.

The Alliance has been strategically developed to mobilize critical resources and engage additional community agencies across the service region (i.e., county health departments, Head Start/WIC programs, medical providers, schools, and disabled services agencies) to collaborate on a comprehensive oral health services project. Through this oral health project, over the next three years, the Alliance strives to

  • reach 10,000+ residents through an oral health awareness campaign,
  • expand oral health services to over 1,200 vulnerable/underserved rural pregnant women, infants, and children, and medically challenged individuals; and
  • provide preventive outreach to 2,700+ children.
