High school juniors can eliminate taking remedial classes in college by earning a 3 or 4 on the on the Smarter Balanced Assessment (SBA) this spring.

A score of 3 or 4 as a junior makes you eligible in college take credit-bearing college-level classes (at the 100 level and above) when you enroll at any of the state's 34 community and technical colleges, any of the public baccalaureate institutions and nine independent colleges.

Just give your Washington college or technical school a copy of your SBA scores once admitted, and skip those remedial classes!

2015 Schools of Achievement
Five district schools have been honored by the state for consistently boosting student learning. Come celebrate with parents, staff and students!
High school readiness
For the last five years, the board has routinely reviewed middle school data to determine how well schools are preparing students for high school. Middle school success can be a key indicator of future high school success.

These indicators are a key element toward helping EACH student graduate. Early interventions and connections with families are among the many ways the district helps students build a success trajectory for high school and beyond.
Getting ready for a 24 credit requirement for students graduating in 2021 and beyond
Lots of past work in this area! You can catch up by reading the December news release about plans to ramp up a system that supports students' success earning 24 credits in very specific subjects. This requirement will kick in for the class graduating in 2021. Until that year, students must earn 22 credits.

The board will explore ways to make the most of the school hours available and how the high school schedule might be reconfigured to offer more classes for students. Today's 6-period day allows students to earn a maximum of 24 credits, which allows no wiggle room for struggling students.
Budget development II
Now that the 2016 legislative session is complete, the board will once again review all of the "contingency" planning done over the past several months. Contingency work was done while district leaders worked with the board to anticipate how or if this session's legislative decisions would torque district budget work.

That planning and careful and conservative budget management this year and some state funding formula relaxations, allow the possibility of more instructional staff for next year. As budget conversations continue, the board will consider approving a final budget for 2016-17 at their July 5, 2016 board meeting.
