Dear ,

Technology is key for English Language Learners to master English

Sixth- through eighth-grade English Language Learner (ELL) students are using electronic devices with free software to master English. Google Translate is a "just in time" tool for students to translate assignments, conversations and directions. Students can translate important forms such as field trip permissions - even medical records.

Students in the district speak more than 80 different languages.

Late-qualifying Henry M. Jackson High School wins Hi-Q | Herald article

Henry M. Jackson High School was the seventh and final team to qualify for the area championships of the academic competition known as Hi-Q.

When the JHS team saw the other two finalist schools, they knew they had formidable competition.

Yet after the final question was asked, it was Jackson - seven seniors all wearing white headbands - holding the trophy. Lake Stevens finished second and Monroe, the top scoring team in the regular season, third.

Foundation breakfast was success!

Everett Public Schools Foundation held its 22nd annual benefit breakfast and is well on the way to accumulating more than $150,000 in donations related to the event. Many, many thanks to all who attended!

Every school in the district has a robotics team. However, not all schools are able to buy more than one robot for students to program and test. All but one of the Foundation robots was sponsored by generous donors at the breakfast. If you have a yen for coding and an urge to put a robot into a child's classroom, contact the Foundation office at 425-385-4694, or email kmckenzie@everettsd.org.

Enrollment realities
Each February the board reviews past and future enrollment trends. On Feb. 9 this year, the board looked out 10 years and discussed the impact on our schools over time as more families choose to live within Everett Public Schools boundaries. You can see the full report online in BoardDocs
Enrollment comparisons
The majority of other school districts in the county have lost student numbers. Lake Stevens, Edmonds, Mukilteo and Everett have gained students in the last year. Everett's student enrollment growth has outpaced all others. See the full report of this and other past and future enrollment projections for the fastest growing school district in the county on BoardDocs
Jefferson students "wow" Boeing engineers
Only one elementary school was invited to take part in The Boeing Company's E-Week activities.

That was Jefferson Elementary's Thunderbot team.

Fresh from their very first robotics competition in which they competed against 40 other teams and took FIRST in Problem Presentation, the Thunderbots also blew away the Boeing engineers.

Reading matters! And parents' reading matters too.

Hawthorne Elementary families gathered for an evening of reading fun and reading learning. Hawthorne first-grade teachers demonstrated ways to read a story and engage students in the fun of extending the story or retelling it - learning valuable interpretation and understanding skills at home.

Such reading fun continues this summer with the district's second annual Summer Reading Challenge, involving families, businesses and regional libraries.

Stay tuned for this summer's challenge and details about how you can take part -- whether or not you have a student in school. See too what students are reading to help eliminate bullying.
