Dear ,

CRC staff continue emergency preparation drills

The Community Resource Center (CRC) was built with safety response in mind.

In a large-scale school emergency, the CRC can open and staff an Emergency Operations Center (EOC) and Emergency Call Center (ECC).

Partnering with regional emergency response experts, CRC staff are training to run those critical emergency response and communications hubs.

On Friday, Feb. 23, staff practiced responding to calls in a school emergency SIMULATION involving a man with weapon on campus.

The April 26 Replacement Levy includes funding for computer network and communications infrastructure to maintain and continually upgrade EOC and ECC technology across the district's 37 square miles and among its 28 schools and families of 19,500 students.

Impact fees pay to build new schools, right?
No. Impact fees only cover a very small portion of the full cost of new schools or new classroom space

Forest View Elementary, in the southern portion of the district is the district's newest school and its 17th elementary school. Funding to build Forest View was approved by voters in the 2006 construction bond and opened in 2007 because of population growth in that area. The April 26, 2016 bond includes funding for another elementary school -- #18 to add classrooms for growing enrollment. In the next 7 years, the district could have nearly 2,000 more students.
For example, in October, 2015, the district received $53,741 in mitigation fees for a 25-house development in the southern portion of the district. This is the area where growth is happening most rapidly and where the district plans to build a new elementary school if voters approve the April 26, 2016 construction bond.

The money from the October mitigation fee income is just about enough to pay for one third of the cost of a new portable classroom.

You can read the full details and learn more about mitigation and impact fees online.

Lightning strikes at Lowell Elementary
Well...not really, but the students' learning was "sparked"

KOMO news meteorologist, Shannon O'Donnell, brought the weather -- and even lightning -- to second graders at Lowell Elementary.

It was all a part of the second-grade science curriculum, but O'Donnell's visit sparked student's imaginations. Students are "pretty accurate" predicting weather now, says their teacher. And parents are learning a lot about clouds and why Florida clouds create rain differently than Washington clouds.
