Everett Public Schools InTouch
Dear ,

Mill Creek students join Google Expedition

Only a few selected schools in this country and around the world are selected to beta test Google Expedition Pioneer Program. On Feb. 2, Mill Creek Elementary School was one of those schools.

Fifth-grade students took virtual field trips to places around the world and even traveled into the past.

Expeditions immerses students in virtual reality, bringing abstract concepts to life and deepening and sparking students' understanding and curiosity of the world beyond classrooms.

Grad rates on the rise still!
Nine out of 10 graduate from Everett Public Schools high schools

Just over a decade ago, only half of the district's seniors graduated. Today 90.2% do in four years; 94.5% do so in five years.

In 2011 more than seven out of 10 seniors were earning high school diplomas; 76.6 percent were doing so in four years, and 78.2 percent were doing so in five years.

Also in 2011, the board approved a new Strategic Plan -- setting 100% graduation as a target. Five years later, the progress toward 100% continues.

Like their earlier counterparts, the board in 2011 made it imperative that district resources and systems focus on supporting each student's success earning a diploma.

American Heart Association honors district wellness program
For the sixth year in a row, the American Heart Association honored Everett Public Schools as a Gold Fit-Friendly Worksite. The award acknowledges the district's Wellness Coordinator Rickie Lee Marker-Hoffman for her work to promote physical fitness and health among school district employees.

Economic studies demonstrate cost savings and higher productivity among businesses with healthier staff.
Full day kindergarten status update
Nationwide, states and municipalities recognize the human and economic benefits of early learning. Increasingly, municipal, not-for-profit and private agencies are partnering with school districts to ensure their communities' youngest children have equitable access to high quality pre-school and seamless and successful connections to kindergarten. High quality early learning programs lay foundational learning experiences to meet 21st century learning and ensure all students are ready to succeed in kindergarten and beyond.

In 2016-17, each of the district's 17 elementary schools will offer FREE full day kindergarten. This will equitably provide a kindergarten link for all families. It will further district and community agency partnership work to ensure high quality education beginning in preschool and through kindergarten and beyond.

In Everett, that collaboration is evident in preschool-through-third-grade partnership work of:
  • Everett Public Schools
  • Opportunity Council
  • Everett Community College
  • Snohomish County Human Services
  • United Way of Snohomish County
  • Community Preschool and Childhood Centers
  • Lake Stevens School District
  • Everett Pubic Schools Foundation
  • Early Childhood Education and Assistance Program --WA State Dept. of Education
  • North West Educational Service District #189
  • Volunteers of America
  • The YMCA of Snohomish County
  • Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation
  • University of Washington
Readiness plans for 2016 Smarter Balanced Assessment
(SBA)

FREE SBA workshop for parents, Feb. 22, 7-8 p.m. at the CRC. Register online to ensure a seat and a computer.

This is the second year students will take the SBA on computers. The board will review district readiness for this year's tests, graduation requirements connected to the tests, technology deployment in preparation for the tests and how staff are learning to prepare students for the tests and administer the tests.

Much of the technology and infrastructure (network and support systems) supporting last year's smooth SBA inaugural launch was made possible by voter support of the 2010 Technology Levy. District voters will consider a replacement technology levy to continue that and other educational technology work on April 26.

Enrollment outlook
Keeping tabs on enrollment projections is a key element of board and staff work. Not only is student enrollment projection a basis for budget planning, it establishes future school building and program needs.

Today's enrollment projections show the district will have almost 2,000 more students K-12 in schools within seven years.

On April 26, voters will consider a construction bond to build a new elementary school and remodel North Middle and Woodside Elementary schools.

The April construction bond is almost $100 million LESS than what the board asked voters to approve a year ago. In community meetings over the last year, the board heard stakeholders' requests for a smaller bond to meet some immediate priority needs rather than a large bond to meet more long-term growth needs.
