High school credit for language skills
In October and November students took language competency tests to earn high school credit. Registration is now open for second round of language competency tests.
Last fall the district offered language competency tests for students who can fluently speak, write, read and listen in a language other than English. Those who demonstrated that competency are eligible for high school credit in that language. If the language score is high enough, a student can also earn a Seal of Biliteracy added to the high school diploma.
Registration is open for the second round of those competency tests to be given on Saturday, Feb. 27. Students can register until Feb. 4 in each school's office.

Garfield Elementary School is a state School of Distinction for steadily and consistently improved student learning. In fact, it's among the top 5 percent of schools in the state doing such improvement. Join the board and Garfield community for Tuesday night's celebration.
January is School Board Appreciation month. Community and staff will officially express thanks for the board's strategic work on behalf of students -- although they earn our support and thanks all year long.
| College Readiness Indicators
| What are the metrics indicating students are on track -- even in elementary school -- to be successful in college and career after high school? You'll learn about those metrics and how well district students are doing K-12 in this report.
The board reviews this information each year to monitor how well students are doing and to make policy decisions as needed to maintain continuous improvement.

Ways to: - Improve school safety -- particularly with attention to school entrances to monitor who comes in and out of a building
- Maintain schools -- because maintenance done now will reduce the cost of more expensive repairs later
- Meet growth needs -- enrollment projections indicate almost 2,000 students will be enrolled over the next seven years
- Ensure equitable access to technology learning tools -- in keeping with the community's expectation that "each" student achieve to high standards and be ready to succeed in a world economy
These are topics community engagement meetings (and online discussions) over the last year have identified as important district priorities. During its December and early January meetings, the board gathered all it had heard from communities, combined that with research-based information about instructional needs, enrollment projections and analysis of school facilities. The board took into consideration communities' advice to "take smaller bites" with bond and levy proposals. The proposed project lists being considered are smaller than proposed in 2014. The bond and levy projects the board may approve on Jan. 26 are interconnected and designed to provide funding sources to meet immediate needs and establish a flat tax rate into the foreseeable future.
