Summer reading adventure is underway!
Every student from first-grade through 12th-grade is reading this summer. And each of them may be tempting you to join the challenge!

The goal is for 20,000 readers in Everett and Mill Creek to be engrossed in the pages of 100,000 books this summer.

See the book lists the kids are choosing among at each grade level -- check to see which ones you have read already -- or not -- and find a cool place to bury yourself in the magic or reading and become one of the 20,000 readers this summer.

Summer reading challenge info is on the web!

Why all the fuss about reading in the summer? Because students who read fewer than four books over the summer tend to experience the dreaded
Summer Slide when school starts. By not practicing skills over the summer, these students' reading skills decline, and it takes time for them to catch up again. In the meantime, students who did read over the summer continue to improve their skills, and the learning gap widens between summer readers and non summer readers.

It's an easy fix -- especially with so many libraries open all summer. Check out the times for school and public library hours at the link above.

July 7 School Board meeting

Pam LeSesne and studentThe school board will meet in regular session on Tuesday, beginning at 4:30 p.m. at the Community Resource Center at 3900 Broadway in Everett.

The agenda and other board materials are online in BoardDocs.

July 7 Board meeting topic highlights

Topics
Details
End of the year report of 2014-15 progress on the district strategic plan
Throughout the year, the board reviews progress on various aspects of the strategic plan. At the end of each year, this all-encompassing strategic plan progress report helps the board monitor district performance and lay future plans.
Classroom materials approval for secondary World Language, AP Science, and Anatomy and Physiology
As has been the case with social studies materials approval, the board has reviewed the selection process. Also, similar to the board's earlier decision about social studies materials, the potential approval of the language and science materials may be tentative, depending upon the final outcome of budget allocations from Olympia.
First reading on the 2015-16 district operating budget
While the legislative process continues, school district budget work continues across the state. State law requires every school district to have a final budget established and board approved by Aug. 31.

Again this year, it was clear the Legislature was not likely to reach agreement in a timely fashion. Therefore, the board and district staff have considered a number of budget scenario possibilities to be ready for whatever final decisions come from Olympia.

The second reading of the budget will be at the next regularly scheduled board meeting on Aug. 25 -- a time when full information and details should be available from Olympia in time to meet the legal Aug. 31 deadline for all state school districts.
