Learning Improvement Friday on Oct. 17 -- school dismisses 75 minutes early that day for all students.

Friday, Oct. 24 through Friday, Oct 31 is regular early release schedule for all elementary and middle schools. These two and a half hour early release days are set aside for parent conferences. Check the back page of the district's student art calendar for your school's early release schedule.


Do you know an eighth-grade student? 

This year's eighth-graders (the graduating class of 2019) are the first group scheduled to graduate with 24 high school credits tucked into their diplomas.

 

Why? To ensure that students across the state are fully, 21st century-prepared for college OR career.

 

Students in the class of 2019 and beyond will earn 17 credits in "core classes," which are common courses considered necessary for graduates - no matter their plans after high school. Students will have a choice of three "Personalized Pathway Requirements" (PPR) credits that further their own interests and align with each student's High School and Beyond Plan. The final four credits are electives that may or may not be related to a student's area of focus.

 

Who is working on this? On Tuesday, Oct. 14, during the regular meeting which starts at 4:30 p.m., the school board will review the district's 24-credit planning process and discuss what steps have been taken and need to be taken as we ready this first group of students and those that follow for 24-credit graduation requirements.

Art teacher Cynthia Gaub earned recognition for her amazing online art gallery and the works students  "hang" there. North's art program is considered the eighth-best in the state for incorporating technology and for engaging students and families in the love of art. Award details are online.

Did you miss last week's school board Community Conversation about district enrollment growth?
More than 150 parents and community members met with the school board at Woodside Elementary on Wednesday evening to learn more about how district enrollment is outpacing schools' classroom capacity.

Information shared and discussed included:
  • Today, the district has more than 400 students over the number enrolled in schools at this time in 2013.
  • Most of those 400+ students are elementary students.
  • Elementary schools are usually built for approximately 560 students.
  • Today's enrollment of more students this year -- and the majority of them being at elementary school -- is consistent with the district's prior planning and projections about the need for an elementary school in the southern portion of the district.
  • The 2014 bond proposal also included funding for additional classroom space for high school students and expansions and improvements of elementary schools across the district, including North Middle School in the northern portion of the district.

The reality is that some schools are over capacity now; more will be in the future. Such capacity issues will remain for three - four years. Some of the solutions discussed at the meeting included:

  • Adding more portables -- each one costs about $150,000 to buy, set up, make ADA accessible and equip with desks and technology. (Jackson High School today has 11 portable classrooms and will have 26 by 2022, unless other solutions are found for enrollment there.)
  • Change boundaries
  • Bus students elsewhere -- to magnet programs or to space available. Based upon projections, Everett High will have room for 209 students in 2022. Cascade will be over capacity by 170 in 2022, and Jackson High will have 645 students over capacity. By 2022, there will be a shortage of high school space in each of the district's existing high schools.
  • Double shift; extend the school year; go to year-round school
  • Change variance policies
  • Send students to other districts with space (In the 1960s, Everett accepted high school students from Mukilteo until that district built its first high school.)
  • Rent space (funding must come out of classroom dollars)
  • Change programs that now have classrooms to "mobile" classrooms. Some schools now have technology "computers on wheels," fondly known as COWS.

Oct. 14 Board meeting topic highlights
 
During the 2014 regular session, Washington's Legislature overwhelmingly approved requiring students in the graduating class of 2019 and beyond to earn 24 credits to graduate from high school. The legislation eliminated the Culminating Project as a graduation requirement and gave districts the opportunity to create policies enabling students to waive two credits for extenuating circumstances. Everett Public Schools now requires 22 credits to graduate. The board will review the planning process to prepare students and the system for meeting the new graduation requirements.

The Cascade cross-country team, in conjunction with Bruin Community Parents, host their annual Bruin Mile/Scrap Metal Drive. The FREE mile run/walk starts on Cascade's track at 8:30 a.m.
