This Morning! MRTA Legislative Alert/Report
Dear MRTA Members: This morning the Governor's veto of SB 509 (tax cut legislation) was overridden by a vote of 109-46 click here to see how your Representative voted. Expect huge cuts to public education in the near future. It has been a good week for Saint Louis Billionaire Rex Sinquefield. Yesterday, enough signatures were turned in to the Secretary of State for verification regarding "Teacher Performance Evaluation Systems." This is the question that will be put on the November ballot regarding whether or not to keep tenure, etc. and to allow performance based testing regarding teacher salaries and retention. We have good news. There were no signatures turned in to the Secretary of State yesterday regarding "The Children's Education Initiative." This is the petition to allow vouchers or tax credits for private schools. We were also successful in getting the "in-state investment" mandate removed from HCS SCS SB 672. This would have required 2% - 5% of your pension system dollars to be awarded for investment by venture capital companies with offices in Missouri. GREAT JOB MRTA! We sent 12,000 e-mails for our "MRTA Call to Action" with thousands of MRTA members contacting their elected officials. The report also broke a record at MRTA with over 15,000 views on our Facebook page in 24 hours. Our retirement systems were once again protected by your involvement. THE WORLD IS RUN BY THOSE WHO SHOW UP!
PLEASE stay tuned as we can never predict what will happen in the final weeks of the Legislative Session. Session ends May 16th at 6:00 PM.
