A very late Hello Again!

Since I last wrote it's all been GO.

Jenny turned 13 which required several celebrations. Two Teen Girls in the house! We've had two sets of visitors. I've exhibited in Zurich and also run my first workshop in Zurich too, which was FAB. Also went away with 70 Girl Scouts for the weekend. And I've been taking swimming lessons to get my stroke in shape for a sprint triathlon in September. Is it just me, or is May always as mad as a March hare?

And although GO can be GOOD you can certainly OD on it, can you not?

Another thing that has changed since the peaceful days of early April is that our tortoise, missing presumed dead for 8 months, reappeared in a dramatic Easter Sunday resurrection.

Now Tim (the tortoise) is my kind of pet. Quite an inspiration on a tearaway Tuesday like today.

So today I'm going to treat myself some Tortoise Time. Quiet. Calm. Unhurried.

Slow is the way to go . . .

What about you? Are you Haring around like a mad thing? Do you need a little Tortoise Time too?

Whatever pace you're choosing, do enjoy yourself this late Spring - more from R & W in June . .

Best wishes

In time honoured fashion, real life is stranger than fiction and I have a tortoise tale to tell.

For 24 glorious, splendid, excitingly responsible hours late last August, we had a tortoise.

At MASSIVE expensive, we'd bought Tim, and the various accoutrements apparently required to sustain tortoises at such a young age, and we'd proudly brought him home.

Less than 24 hours later, he had totally disappeared.

I can't quite explain how that felt. There was, of course, anger, sadness, disappointment, dispair, blame, denial, hope, desperate searching, tri-lingual posters being created and neighbours being told. Yet nothing. Sticks were found, dogs were borrowed, bushes were poked and prodded, stones were unturned and the web was extensively searched. Still nothing. Slowly, sadly, we gave up hope.

And so it was somewhat of a shock that on Easter Sunday, some 8 months later, I took a call from a neighbour with news. Tim had been discovered under a rock in their garden. A little beaten up, but very much alive and kicking.

And after the shock wore off, how happy were we to be proud owners of Tim again.

Not every tale has a happy ending of course - we've mourned many other pets - but, it's fun to know that even after all hope had gone, life can turn around and give one of its little surprises!
Have yourself some Tortoise Time!
Ever envied the gentler speed of the tortoise? Bring a little tortoise time into your life today!

1. Slow Down

We have an exercise in yoga where we walk slowly, mindfully to the end of the mat, where each step is like the first step we've ever taken. If you watch a tortoise, each step is like that - deliberately, consciously, splendidly slow.

In my swimming lessons, I've been re-learning my strokes so I can get more efficient and effective - and when I slow down, I really notice what I am actually doing with my legs/arms/body/breath.

What could you do super slowly today?

What do you notice?

2. Pace Yourself

Tortoises don't race around like mad things,  but they cover a surprising amount of ground when you turn your back for a moment. They just keep going at a pace that works for them.

Ever done too much and needed to go FLOP? How about committing to less for a day and taking things at a gentle, kinder pace?

3. Bask in the Sun

If the sun is shining, Tim the Tortoise is mainly to be found enjoying it, basking in the warmth. It's essential for his shell and his digestion!

So even on a busy day, find yourself a sunny spot, close your eyes and soak up the rays for a moment or ten.

4. Retreat

You don't just have to save your retreats for when the going gets tough. Hide yourself away and step back from the world for a while. Get inside your shell.
