Hello again,

It hardly seems any time since the last Roots and Wings, but when I read through it this morning, I realise how much has changed in the meantime. In our garden, there are the most gorgeous things blossoming - and I wonder what is starting to blossom in your life right now?

As Mums, we often talk about our children and all the wonderful things they are doing and experiencing. Let's not leave all the development to our kids - I urge you to take your share too!

Springtime is often when we have a good clear out to create space for what's coming up - ie blossoming - in our lives. I've been feeling the urge to create space for a while now, making ever more bold moves with my black bin bag into the attic, the "spare" wardrobe and the hoarding place of all random objects, the laundry room. Not to mention my office. It is clear to me that change is on its way, and needs a nice, clear space to welcome it.

How do you feel when you know you want change? Sometimes just moving things around can help unlock that energy and motivation. Try it over Easter - shake things up and see what comes out!

I met someone very recently who works to help you in your home spaces - check out Andrea from SOS Plus - Swiss Organising Services - and we had a fab chat about our different approaches to coaching. I loved hearing how new things blossom for her clients once they have created the right home environment.

This month's Roots and Wings looks at clearing out and creating space so that we can allow new things to blossom - I'm not talking about your normal spring clean here.

Alive to Change is having a Spring Clean too. I've accumulated many workshops, programme concepts and wild ideas over the years which I do love, of course, but which I may need to tidy away, give away or even (sob) throw away - so that I can really showcase my favorite (and your favorite) goodies!

One thing I'll be keeping for the time being is my next workshop -  So you think you can't sell (through Curious Courses - in Basel 24th April) - I'm very excited to be doing this again in Zurich on the 15th May. And then, the week after, Alive to Change will be at the Women's Expo in Zurich, on the 25th May.

Enjoy the unfolding of new leaves, and new blossoms coming to life this Spring,

All the best,

Kirstin

Roots and Wings - April 2014

What is now ready to blossom in you?

The funnest and most fulfilling part of my work is noticing people blossom in ways they may never have expected when we start working together.

I loved this part of my job when I worked in the corporate world where I was lucky enough to have roles where I could really see people and teams develop and grow. And it was the reason I wanted to continue working in this area after my move abroad.

As Mums Abroad we sometimes feel we have left behind parts of ourselves with each move, whether that is sustaining friendships, opportunities to shape and share our interestes and talents, places that nourish us, our loved ones who allow us to experiment no matter what.

In a new place, it isn't always immediately obvious quite how we will blossom and grow into our new selves in this different environment.

So there may be a gap between arriving and feeling that you're showing the world (or yourself) how splendidly coloured your gorgeous blossom really is. It can be a long old gap.

We don't all want the same thing (fortunately) so your take on blossoming might not be a bold, public statement heralding HERE I AM! It might be a quieter sense of contentment, of movement forward, of peaceful fulfilment. Blossom isn't definable by any external measure, and certainly isn't up for competition.

Yet we can surprise ourselves sometimes with the kind of blossom we produce. Provoked by new friendships, a chance encounter, a different kind of environment or opportunity, by a restlessness and desire for change, we can find ourselves in a new SPACE and ready for something entirely unexpected.

Let's be frank, sometimes the sheer unheavalness of moving abroad can force us into this new SPACE.

It doesn't always feel like a great space to be in at first, or at second . . . or for quite some time. The space of transition can feel painful and tiring, and uncertain and worrying, and damn frustrating at times. We can find ourselves focusing on what we are cut off from, and all the things that are in the way to prevent us tempting in whatever we may want to bring into our lives.

But I believe that this sometimes turbulent and tiresome transition is also prompting us to do some serious rethinking. What now? How to make that work? When to make a start?

It is normal that this thinking isn't in a straight line - you may feel that you're flitting from idea to idea like a butterfly. And that's a part of the process. By testing things out, by experimenting and learning what you may like, what you might want, and what that could feel like - this is how you can start discovering what kind of things may be waiting to blossom inside of you!

So flit - and later, perhaps, commit - but above all, enjoy seeing what unfolds and blossoms in you this Spring.

Do you have SPACE?
And if not, what can you create?
How much space is there in your life for something new?

Plenty?

A little?

Not a lot?

None at all?

When you thought about this, were you predominantly thinking of TIME?

Change requires more than just time. In fact, often, time is the least of our worries and will fall into place if the other Space elements are in place.

I think space for change requires a combination of time, energy, motivation, support, mindset and physical environment. Time is just the easiest one to count!

I also think that tinkering with each element can help create the space you are looking for - even if you don't know what to use it for yet.

So why not experiment with creating space. What could you do to create a new space in your life? What about?

Meditating
Getting outside by yourself
Reading a different kind of book
Clearing a whole shelf in your bookshelf
Do something different first thing in the morning - try a new thing each day for a  week
Change the direction that you sit in at work
Sit on a different seat
Cook something new
Sit down or lie down and "don't" for a while
Call that crazy friend. You know the one.
Go somewhere new
Surprise everyone
Just stop doing something that is, frankly, boring you.

Something else?

Or remember that thing you've been saying for ages you'd like to do. Just give it a go! Even just the once!

Feel the space opening up with each experiment. Now what can you use it for?

Spring Clean YOU!
It can get cluttered and dusty inside there too!
Doesn't it feel great to have a good clear out! We know already that clearing our physical environment can have a positive effect on our well-being, and we are often simply drawn towards a good sort out when we want to feel more in balance again.

Spring cleaning ourselves is another matter. It involves us shaking the dust off those old thought patterns and self-beliefs and taking a good look at what we have, what we need and what we really need to replace.

Does our way of thinking about a situation help or hinder us? Does what we say about ourselves (in our little voices in our heads, or out loud) serve us still? Could we use a fresh perspective? What helpful resources do we have in there that need to be used again?

Looking at ourselves in a new way might seem odd. After all, we've lived with ourselves for years. And we're used to the way we are. And we couldn't imagine ourselves any other way.

Or could we?

Just test out one idea - what would happen if you replaced that thing you keep saying to yourself?

What thing?

That "I can't do that thing" thing

Well I can't!

Just indulge me here.

OK, what could I replace it with?

How about adding a yet to the end?

Oh, that's interesting.

Or adding a "I wonder if I can do that thing"

Hmmm

Or a "I'd love to learn how to do that thing"

Yeah, OK

Or even, if you are feeling up to it, "I WILL learn to do that thing".

YEY, I WILL!!

We are sometimes so used to our own internal environment that we never stop to give it a little spring clean. Even just this one "small" adjustment (taking a bit of self-talk off the shelf, dusting it and mending it a little) can make a massive shift - and create the space you need.

Experiment with it. Notice what is going on inside there!
