Roots and Wings September 2013
Back to school again
Dear all

It's back to school time for those of us with school aged children. Some of you are already half way through the first half term, and others are just into "La Rentrée". It's a change of pace, a chance to get back into the old (or start a new) routine, and, inevitably, it's time to face the odd challenge or two. Children and adults alike can find it hard to say goodbye to the freedom of summer and hello to the more structured school day, early mornings and early bedtimes, brainfood instead of icecream.

The theme of this Roots and Wings is not about our children going back to school, but more about you. Have you been "back to school" recently?

You'll have seen too in my recent extra newsletter that Alive to Change is now 6 years old. It's growing up rapidly and lots of interesting things are happening. I'm very much continuing to develop Alive to Change AND am now embarking on an exciting new joint venture with friend and fellow Coach Sharon Marshall. It's called Dare to Dream Experience - and if you live in or around Basel, don't miss our special Dare to Dream Experience Launch on Thursday 19th September, from 7-9pm at QU.BA, 12 Bachlettenstrasse. You'll see more below. And if you can't make it - keep lunchtime on the 19th in mind for a FAB lunchtime event at QU.BA.

I'm excited about the Autumn Programme, there's been sign ups already and it's the first time I've felt
this organised this soon. I hope you can make one or more of the workshops - and if there is something on that interests you but you can't attend at that date or time, just let me know, I am sure I can organise something in the evening, in your home, 1-1, over the telephone  . . .

I've had a good response to my special offer during Discover Coaching week - I'll run it again after Christmas. If you missed out but are still interested in finding out more about coaching, exploratory sessions are free and can be arranged at a time to suit.

Whatever you're doing this September, I hope there's a lot of laughter involved. Look out too for a new workshop (not yet in the Autumn programme) I'm developing with Parenting by Connection coach Kate Orson - codenamed Giggle Parenting for the time being - more information coming soon!

all the best

Have you been "Back to School" recently?

I've talked about this before at the start of the school year, but it is worth repeating. When was the last time you went back to school? I don't mean your 20th, 25th or even 30th+ school reunion, I'm talking about the learning process we can continue even once we've finished in the classroom.

The joys of learning as an adult are that we get to choose the subject, and, to a certain extent, the curriculum that would interest and excite us. We have those new starter nerves as we tackle something different and as we find ourselves out of our comfort zone. Yet we get stretched a little, and find our neurons thanking us for renewing some old bonds, or sparking new connections.

We benefit in lots of ways from doing new things. We build confidence, once we overcome the initial hurdles. We feel stimulated and mentally challenged. And we often come into contact with new people.

Just like children learn anywhere and everywhere, learning as an adult doesn't need to be in a classroom or institution. Taking on a new project, trying something different, talking to someone new, tackling a long-forgotton skill, setting yourself a challenge, finding an alternative approach to an age-old problem, reading a book, signing up to an e-programme - the possibilities are endless.

Having said all of that, some of you will feel that you are permanently back in school, continuously learning, feeling challenged (or worse), having to do your own homework. The thought of going up another learning curve may be more than you can bear right now.

But there is a different kind of lesson I'm sure we could all learn from time to time. The lesson which teaches you when to take time out for you, when to stop cramming frantically, when to switch into a stiller, more reflective mode.

What do you want to learn next?

Thank you all for your continued support and engagement with Alive to Change. I love to receive your feedback, so please let me know what you like - or otherwise.

If you like this, others might too. Please forward to a friend, and especially any newcomers.

My Dare to Dream coaching workbook will be on sale from the 19th September. Believe and Act are following shortly behind. This represents another step forward for me in my coaching journey - and the beginning of some childhood dreams coming into life too!
